I'm a teacher in Toronto, Canada, where the RCM Examination system is the standard, and I'm contemplating working in Hong Kong, where the ABRSM is the standard. I currently have my ARCT in Piano for Teaching. What do I need to do in order to receive the LRSM in Piano? Are there any transferable components from ARCT?
Are you interested in the LRSM in performance or teaching?
If you are interested in the LRSM in performance and you have an ARCT in piano performance, you can take the LRSM right away. The Associated Board recognizes the ARCT as a valid substitution for the DipABRSM as a prerequisite. However, you should double check with the Board to see if the ARCT in piano teaching could be used as a substitute. The syllabus does not specify whether the ARCT has to be in performance or teaching.
If you are interested in the LRSM in teaching, then you will have to take the DipABRSM in teaching first. The Board does not recognize the ARCT in teaching as a valid substitution for the DipABRSM. In order to take DipABRSM, you have to show the Associated Board Grade 8 piano and Grade 6 theory certificates. If you don't have these, you may use the RCM Grade 9 piano, Grade 4 harmony, and Grade 4 counterpoint certificates as substitutes. And when you enter the LRSM, you may substitute the Associated Board Grade 8 theory with RCM Grade 5 harmony+counterpoint and Grade 5 analysis.
