Hello all... I've never posted here before I don't think - hides my lack of brass knowledge!

Anyway, I'm posting on behalf of parents and brother. Oh the perils of musical siblings... my parents must be fed up - If they can't hear piccolo, clarinet or trumpet practice, they're buying instruments...

The new addition to the family will be a flugelhorn. My brother is 14, so he's not likely to be smashing up an instrument, he saves that for the guitar! He plays trumpet and cornet to Grade 6.
I was just wondering about a few different brands - I think he will do some testing but I'd like to know some more long-term commonsense things like if the instrument will last, etc.
Budget is £500 or thereabouts. We are aware of the importance of an instrument that is more than just low-priced. We've experienced false economy in the form of a piccolo snapping in half! So the budget isn't set in stone but we cant afford to pay the earth.

Just a few models that seemed like good value were the Jupiter and the Weril. does anyone know if these are any good and what they are like in comparison to the Yamaha, Bach and the 'bigger names'?

Any help would be appreciated! smile.gif kate

I used to play an old Boosey and Hawkes flug...beautiful instrument, but no idea of cost. Have to run now, but I'll look it up later! smile.gif

I would recommend your brother tries out several makes before buying one. Boosey and Hawkes I think are pretty good, as are besson. I have no idea how much these cost, but you could easily look it up on the internet. Why not try ebay to see if there are any cheap(ish) ones - brass instruments never seem to be cheap!

It was a beauty! I loved it on tour in paris!

I would say that a brand new, student flugle would cost around 500 at least, with professional models clearing 2000 - thats what my friends paying for a nice jazz model such as an eclipse.

Dont be tempted by ebay and cheap options, go for recomended brands.

You can expect to find a good second hand flug for around 400-800 a good old besson or boosey and hawkes are the best to look for - tough, well made, and long lasting, beautiful sound as well.
