As this is the 'Odd Instruments' thread, I wonder if anyone knows the name of the strange electric/xylophone 'thingy' that Rofl Harris used...?

That would be the Stylophone. The keyboard was made up of metal pads and you pressed these with a sort of pen thing, thereby creating a sort of electronic quacking sound at the required pitch.

If they're about to make a revival, I'm outta here.

I used to have a Stylophone - I think my mum still has it in a cupboard somewhere! It came with a set of records that you could play along to. I remember I was best at "Somewhere over the Rainbow", with the vibrato effect switched on....

Getting back to the point of the thread, the most exotic bit of percussion I play is the good old vibraslap. A bit mundane alongside radiators and cans of dog food, but I like it!

Ah yes, the jawbone for vegetarians. Cunning invention, but you have to be careful about saying "I play the vibraslap" in the company of non-percussionists. They may not understand at first ...

That is incredibly true - my friend and I were told we were percussion snobs a while ago, as we were wincing about the sound of the triangle (it was being hit in the wrong place)!

I agree that the vibraslap is cool! Always fun to play! Can't forget the acme siren as well!

Even worse was when I stopped another band's rehearsal to rush in and retune the drummer's kit... It sounded SOOOO awful!!
