Does anyone know what an x symbol above a note means?

I am guessing that it might mean pizzicato and is used when the pizzicato only affects a single note or chord but I am not sure as I have never seen it used before.

When I've seen it, it usually means 'snap pizz' or 'Bartok pizz'. That is, a really strong pluck which snaps the strings back against the fingerboard with a sort of slap.

Thanks KTViola and welcome to the forums.

That makes sense, and it sounds right when I play it like that. When I have seen Bartok pizzicato indicated before, 'snap pizz' has been written next to the note or chord.

Edit: I've just remembered that the symbol for Bartok pizzicato that is usually used is a circle with a line through it so I'm still a bit puzzled.

Well left hand pizz is normally a cross, but + rather than x. Maybe it's a variant on that? unsure.gif

Not something I've come across before, but I'll print the excerpt and ask around.
