Does anyone know about what grade Bouree in Em by bach arranged for classical guitar is, I'm sure it's not anything very high was just wondering as I'm really a rock guitarist at heart and have never done any grades,

How about Minuet in G?

I was going to attempt these two part inversions:
in C major
in D major

Would be helpful if anyone new the level of these pieces so I could place myself. Again I'm not a very accomplished classical guitarist, just broadenign the ol' horizons! smile.gif Ant

I think Minuet in G is usually placed in about the grade 3-ish bracket, but was also largely self taught (up until recently) so could be wrong!

There are a bunch of bouree's so I'm not sure which one you're referring to - can you give a number, or be more specific?

Bach's Bourree in E minor (BWV 996) is at Grade 6 level for ABRSM but I think for another board it's at Grade 4 or 5.

Guildhall puts the Em Bouree at Grade 6 as well. I think it's the last line that's the problem. I play it most days but I still trip on the last line...

I trip on most things, lol.

Mostly that would be because of the two distinct voices.... The rub is to keep the time, balance and contrast the voices and as everyone else says, get the last 4 bars right.. Remember grades are performance examinations and not just about playing through. You have to put your mark on the piece and perform it biggrin.gif
Also remember that there are two other pieces to perform at grade 6. The fact that you can play something at the grade that you find fairly simple wouldn't place you at the required standard. We all find some pieces easy to play and other pieces hard.
Have a go at Tarrega's Pepita. Another board has that as a grade 7 piece and should give you an indication of your standard.

Get a full rundown from Grade 8
Seeing as you like JSB, probably a good piece for you would be Gavotte en Rondeau. That may test you a bit? Watch JW on youtube give a demo HERE
Also not on the list, but a difficult piece to play correctly would be Cavatina. Again, another board has that as a supplementary grade 8 piece.

It isn't hard to read music for guitar. The reason people find the process hard is because they don't know the note positons on the neck. If you have knowledge of the fretboard it isn't hard to apply one to the other. However, it may take some thought and forward plannng as to which may be the best position to play certain sections or phrases within a certain piece of music. And you may find the more you experiment with pieces, the more you find different ways to play it. The Bouree in question is a fine example of this in action and for me could be another reason as to why it is at grade 6.

I agree re the voices in the piece. There's another piece on the grade six abrsm syllabus (the Barrios piece) that is deceptively easy, but requires a lot of skill to bring out the different textures of the parts.

It's more about interpretation at this level than it is about just being able to play the pieces.
