Hello Percussionists
We have a family member who is studying CMT at uni and whose drumkit has expanded exponentially to the point where he cannot possibly bring it home in the holidays. No problem at the moment but sooner or later he will graduate (pray heaven) and then it will have to be parked somewhere, preferably where he can play it occasionally.
What do others do?
I am musing along the lines of renting a storage unit (no residents nearby to complain to the Environmental Health about the noise) or getting a bank loan to buy a removal van so he can drive it away when he needs to practice.
Any suggestions welcome.

Ours is the front room hiding the Victorian fire place (someone broke in nextdoor and stole their's)!
Thankfully the neighbours don't hear it too much but then we live in an old Semi with Students renting the house attached. We were considerate enough to put the kit in a room that doesn't share a wall with the neighbours.

I just posted in the other thread about practice time, but actually my post would have been better here! I hadn't seen this thread yet...

One of my kits is in the living room...
The other is in my bedroom...
Does it matter?
No!

My friend keeps his kit in a garden shed. Stick a light in, and maybe nail up some insulating material on the walls to contain the sound and keep the kit at a comfortable temperature. A small shed would do, they're not too expensive either.

Removal van?
Removal van??A guy I know used to transport his kit between gigs in an MGB (1960s two-seater British sports car). If you've seen an MGB you won't believe it possible, and I suppose it can't have been a very extensive kit, but anyway he did it. People came from miles around just to see him loading it.

Lol...
Unlike most 16/17-year-olds, I am looking for an old van as my first car!!
Then again...
Unlike most 16/17-year-olds, I own two drum kits and a sailing boat, so have need of the extra room!

So Mel2 ... Manek has the solution
He
'owns two drum kits and a sailing boat' Just follow his example and buy a large sailing boat
Place drum kit in sailing boat. Set sail. Drop anchor some distance from shore. Practise. Return.
There - you've solved two problems in one go
i) where to put the drum kit
ii) upsetting your neighbours

F'kin' genius!

There's only one flaw...
My boat is only 11ft long and would probably sink with just one drum onboard, let alone both kits!

You know the answer to that - get a bigger boat!

Or, how about he does lots of drumming gigs so he earns loads of money. Then he can afford the big boat AND can pay for the party too!

Hello folks,
Been away for a while so was surprised to see a few more replies to this query. The problem remains! Love the idea of the boat but I fear that would be even damper than the gagrage/shed idea, even though said son lives at present on the coast. (BTW, could he plug his headphones in out at sea?! 'scuse my ignorance)
I keep trying to suggest to sonny that he ought to hold out for cash remuneration for the gigs instead of payment in beer - but I'm sure he is always up for a party, afloat or otherwise.
The approximate size of the (assembled) kit to date is 8-9 sq m and has outgrown the house. Just wondered how others had got round this.

If there are any tycoons out there willing to provide a yacht rent free I'm here waiting!

My son is hoping to start but we have the same problem of nowhere to put it! We are beginning a loft conversion soon for him so he has a nice big bedroom, might have to put up double insulation

might ????
We have a three story house and my daughters have their bedrooms on the top floor above us. They sound like a herd of elephants anyway - I would hate to imagine them with drums.

The trouble is we live in a terraced house and his bedroom currently is 8ft by 6ft!!! We think it'll be cheaper to put a loft conversion up rather than move (and keep our tiny mortgage!). We will get him a kit when it's done, he's never shown any interest at all in music before (he's now 10), so he must want to play!

How about an electronic kit? Takes up much less space and he can plug in headphones so no-one else can hear a thing.
I don't have the room to leave my kit up (we are lucky enough to have a room set aside as a music room but it's pretty full with the other several thousand instruments we own) so it lives in cases under the stairs until I need it.
I played it in St. Albans Cathedral last week (well, a very small part of it - had to leave 5 toms and 3 cymbals at home due to transport problems) and someone else also had their kit there as well - and would you believe it was EXACTLY the same model and colour????? Premier Genista green....lovely! They looked really good sat on opposite sides of the stage!

My dad's drum kit is in what my family call 'the music room', where the piano is.

8 - 9 sq m???
Can I have a list of all the drum stuff he has? That is HUUUUUGE!
Is he, by any chance, Nicko McBrain???

Oh... I'm buying a huge boat... And throwing a party onboard!
But tickets to the party (yes you have to buy tickets!) will be hideously expensive - to cover venue costs!!
