I know that it is possible to get coloured soprano (Descant) recorders but these look little more than toys usually. After seeing the lovely metallic coloured trumpets and flutes in a music shop recently I have been wondering if any maker is producing something similar in the larger sizes of recorder. Has any one seen any? I know of the Mollenhauer ones.

are those like the yamaha bubble gum recorders? They look vile, and you would be able to see spit dribbling down them...
Someone in the year below me plays the cornet with a plastic and coloured mouthpiece - i thought that was a bit odd seen as we are all supposed to be on our way to becoming proffesional musicians, he had reasons, I think it was something to with them just being nicer to play with.

Yes I know a professional french horn player who used one of these and a trumpeter who used it for jazz music.

The Mollenhauer recorders are not like the see-through Yamaha soprano recorders. I know the yamaha 300 series and have also seen the plain cream coloured ones that are the same but much cheaper. It seems to me that there are many young players who would love to have recorders in more exciting and vibrant colours. I would love a great bass in silver with multi coloured flecks in for example too. I know of two young teenage string players whose playing has really taken off since they had new coloured violins for Christmas. I would love to know if someone is making decent alto or tenor recorders in metallic colours perhaps. I may take an old Yam and try a paint job on it to see how my pupils react, and to see how much it alters the sound of it.

I know they look good, but don't know if i'd like it! The only multicoloured recorders I've seen are the semi-transparent ones!

My daughters had these and the youngest took two grades on it without any problem. when we changed it for the cheapo wooden Yam, her teacher thought the plastic one was better

The transparent yamahas are actually quite good - better than the cheaper brown or cream ones. Yes, you can see the spit dribbling down - not very pleasant, and young children tend to be quite spit-y! But it doesn't show from a distance. My boys have a blue and a green one - makes it much easier telling whose is whose.

Great minds think alike!! This is exactly why we got them, sick of the arguments over the brown ones

Oh.Dear. Lord.
An associate of mine bought what i'm pretty sure was one of those when we were in Paris. The paint was peeling off. It was disguisting to play and it couldn't reach any high notes.
Of course it was still fun to play at 3 in the morning in a crowded hostel...

Nearly as pretty as the coloured flutes and clarinets you can buy!
