Full Version: Soprano Sax - Do You Play It?

A recent thread has brought soprano sax to the forefront of my mind and I so miss hearing it. I only seem to hear it played at the jazz festivals I go to during the summer and occasional jazz concerts locally.

Are there any soprano-playing forumites who are going to be playing it at any of the forum concerts, or do you play anywhere near Leeds? rolleyes.gif

I have played one...

I loved it! Really good fun - but I can't afford one atm!

It's the one sax I don't really have any desire to play (or any of the even smaller ones). Not that I don't like it when it's played well and I've heard a few people playing it very well, just it doesn't appeal to me as one to add to my collection. I still much prefer playing tenor to alto though I'm trying some concentrated alto exclusive practice at the moment to see if I can't tame it a bit. I'd really love a bari, they've got such a great sound.

I love them, I think sometimes they sound medieval!

Do you do requests...?! biggrin.gif

Can I request Petite Fleur (I have the music) and will you play it at the Leeds forum concert tongue.gif We could duet with my clari if you like, but if you'd rather play solo, I'd love to hear you play solo as well. smile.gif

I see you're in Liverpool and Livmaestro is coming over to Leeds from Liverpool for the concert....

Not that I'm being pushy or anything, you understand - I'm just plotting and planning! tongue.gif biggrin.gif

How hard is it? I am not a great player, I have only been playing for the last 12/13 months.

When is the leeds concert?

I've played soprano sax for 3 1/2 yrs in a nine piece jazz band and sax quartet - I love it, although occasionally lapse into clarinet fingering lol!

The Leeds concert is Saturday 2nd June and is being held at The Yorkshire College of Music & Drama.

I've got Petite Fleur in two versions - the official version which is not very hard, and an arrangement which my teacher did for me which is even easier. I can play them and I'm only G2 so I don't think you'd have any problem. If you're interested, I can PM you about the music. Do you know the piece?

You're a long way away from Leeds for me to come and hear you ... sad.gif

.... but you're very close to Egham where the forum studio recording session is being held! biggrin.gif I'm sure katyjay who's organising the event and barry-clari who's organising the music would be delighted if I suggested you came along to play your soprano sax biggrin.gif What do you think??? smile.gif

EDIT: Oooops, I've just been looking at the Studio Recording thread and I see you're already down as possibly coming ph34r.gif Do hope you can make it and that you'll bring your soprano smile.gif

I have my grade 3 sax so I should be ok. It might be possible for me to come along but there is a small chance that I will be away, don't know the date yet rolleyes.gif
I don't actually know the piece unsure.gif

Lol... I had this problem at the Market Harborough "do" I attended...!! I had taken both Clarinet and Alto Sax but played the Sax most of the day... Prior to that event, though, I hadn't played it for a month or so, so I kept slipping into Clarinet fingerings if I didn't concentrate - especially at the beginning of the day!!
