I know I perhaps shouldn't be posting this on the AB forum, but .... I've entered quite a few kids for LCM Step 1 Keyboard this term, and many are struggling with the changes of chord, especially from C to F, they can't get their little fingers round it. Can anyone suggest an imaginative way in which I can help them? I've told them to keep their hands as still as possible, and just practise the chord changes over and over.(If you know the syllabus, it's the "Drum Break" study and the 3 Exercises that are causing them problems. ) Thanks!

Afraid I don't know the syllabus, but are the chords in the left, and are they in root position? So C-E-G and F-A-C in the exact order?

I would guess at root positon C to 2nd inversion F which invloves extension of the thumb and otherwise keeping the hand still as Madge says.

I've taught the grades before but not the steps. The way I teach it is to play the C chord G C E with fingers 5 2 1, then keep the 2 on the C whilst putting the 4 on A and moving the thumb up to F. It isn't easy for a lot of beginners but is the best way long term to do this chord change. For children with small fingers try and get them to pivot round with finger 2. Hope this helps smile.gif
