Come on gotta be a few more petrolheads on here!!!!
First of all i start with a what car post, should i go for a Porsche 968 or TVR Chimaera? Other suggestions welcome though must be around £10K, RWD, fast etc. Pref. be a future classic!

Well personally I'd go for a Porsche 993 coupe, around 20 K though, and at the moment as hard to find as rocking horse s***.
I've never driven a 968, quite pretty though and less likely to have bits dropping off than a TVR !

I do love the 993, quite a few for sale on pistonheads.com but as you say around £20K, turbos' more. IMHO the 993 was the best Porsche they've ever made. A really nice drive too!
Your probably right about the TVR and things dropping off it though my mum runs a TVR Independent garage so it's not as if i'd have to pay for the repairs!!!! I drove a 968 the other weekend, very nicely balanced and a lovely engine, though not as nice sounding as a the TVR's V8, drove many a TVR so i know their quirks, less so with a Porsche but it'd be nice to be a bit different!!!

I've give up on fifth gear- Vicki BH and that guy in the cafe were getting just too irritating.
I do like Top Gear, though I wish they might occasionally mention cars. I find that Ski Sunday is going the same way with skiing virtually never mentioned.

That sounds a good one! Is that your first Porsche meet? They are meant to be a really good club but i don't know alot about them TVRCC are exellent so if there on par with them, it will be great! The alfa club is a bit well, um, unreliable!!! Though Alfaholics (classic Alfa club) is great! Does the Porsche club have a Challenge Cup?
I go on something nearly every week! We have a meet every other Tuesday night, Denby is once a month in the summer, other runs organised, track days etc. Then theres one off stuff like le mans etc.
If you get into you'll be addicted! It's a wonder i've got time for music, with all that!

I've always (since we moved to England) been "sort of" a TVRCC member but only because mums' always had a TVR so i've just always gone along to meets!
Nice photo, i've got one a bit like that of my Alfa, i'll try to update mine to that one but i never seem to be able to do it!
Edited to add: I've changed the photo to the Alfa one!

Nice picture of the Alfa !
No my parents didn't have a Porsche- I was just a junior member- I did get my Dad to phone up about a Porsche 914 (for sale for £400) but it had sold (These are routinely for sale for >£10,000 these days).
And no I didn't pass my test when I was 17. I failed a test when I was 17 and didn't start having lessons again until I was 31.

You've always been a Porsche fan then? You don't see many 914s' about!!! I test drove a 968 edited to add it was a 944 convertible, not a 968 (not sure why i wrote 968!) the other day, a very well balanced car, it did sound too bad either - for a Porsche..... not sure if i'm getting rid of the GT-4 though yet!
I not that loyal to one marque, though i'd only buy classic or performance cars, i don't do repmobiles - lifes too short!!!

Yep, i'm 18, i drive a 1967 Alfa and a 1994 Celica GT-4.
How? I run my own business as well as working for my mum who owns an independent garage. I spend nearly all i earn on cars, track days etc. because i love the whole scene. Insurance on a classic and a modern classic is cheap, as there is little risk factors due to most people my age driving a small hatch.
I knew i'd never be clever enough to stay at school or go to uni, after i left i worked as an Estate Agent but i got fed up of the office life (very quickly) so i took a risk in starting my own business and living out my motoring dreams! Going well so far and hoping to race something, anything next season!
What i don't spend on cars goes on music!

Don't worry about the impracticalities, do it! If thats what you want to do of course.
If you don't already know much about the mechanics, get yourself on a course and learn how to do most of the work yourself.
If you just want to enjoy driving more, get yourself on a couple of trackdays, track experience days or do your ARDS. PM me if you want anymore info regarding track days etc.

The good thing about classic cars is of course they don't depreciate.
Also they may break down, but they do tend to be fairly mechanically straightforward unlike new cars.
I also have a Fiat Panda- this means I have the same car collection as James May!

Very true about classic cars, they only go up in value and are (usually) quite simple to repair!
Had a great run out today, was driving the Celica round the Cat and Fiddle, up to Leek, up to Buxton and back to Cat anf Fiddle, great run apart from the weather! About 20 of us turned up so i was pleased about that, should have been 40 but the TVR's didn't bother!!!!!

Arggghhhhhh!!!!!!!
Rumours of a top rate of Road (Trident Nuclear missile) fund license rising to £400 for 'inefficient cars'
My Fiat Panda is a 1.4 L, 60 HP car that does 40 MPG
That is 43 HP/Litre and 1.5 HP/MPG
My Porsche is a 2.7 L, 240 HP car that does ~26 MPG
That is 89 HP/Litre and 9.2 HP/MPG
So surely my Posrche is more efficient ? At least in terms of turning petrol into energy.

Hello!!
I don't need to worry about the tax YAY! One is the pricely sum of £0 being made in 1967, the other is £175 as it's made before 2001 and is above 1600CC, incentive to buy an older car!
I'm currently looking at buying a Chimaera of my own - should be in the next month or so

! I've also seen a very nice BMW 8 Series for sale which for some reason i'm loving at the moment soooo i'll have to wait and see, either get rid of mine and get an 8 series (850CSi with the manual box) and a Chimaera. Or get rid of the GT-4 and get a Chimaera, or the 8 series (as i drive TVRs' everyday anyway) and keep the Alfa decisions decisions.........think i'll be keeping the Alfa though!
Never buy a car newer than 2001 to keep the tax down, thats the secret - unless you like boring cars that is!
Any good hoons this year so far Ian? I was at Donnington for the 750MC Championship last Sunday was good also got a Cheshire hoon this Sunday!
Editted to add: How much is a Group F car? Out of interest?

You get 26mpg from the Porsche? Thats good! My GT-4 which is a 2.0Ltr, turbo pushes out 310BHP (not standard i've added a few more horses! - standard figures are 240BHP) and i get about 20MPG.
Never worked out what the Alfa does as i only do about 2000 miles in it a year!
Whats the 0-60 times like?

Mar 28 2007, 06:17 PM
The group F is 195 py at the moment, going up to 210 I believe- the boxster only just scrapes into group F.
The 0-60 time is quoted as six seconds.
In the future I quite fancy a Porsche 993 myself- the last of the air cooled 911's.

Not too bad then, on the tax.
0-60 on the GT-4 is 5.2 secs.
I drove a 993 C2 not so long ago it really was a lovely drive, better than the 996 IMHO (drove both) though i'm not one for all these driver aids etc. They are very nice cars' and are more expensive than the newer 996, they will continue to rise as well and are already becoming a future classic.
At the moment i'm swaying towards the BMW as i can drive a TVR whenever i like but i would like one of my own, suppose i've got plenty of time to get one! In general i don't like BMW's the only ones i do like are the 8 series and the M3.

I love cars!
though i dont have anything as exciting as you do!
My cars have been Puke green Renault 5 with rust patches,
Austin metro,
Austin Maestro (ugh! ),
Ford Escort 1.3 ###### car kept breaking down,
Vauxhall astra 1.7td not bad,
Fiat Punto 1.7tdi lowered and with alloys (nice car!),
Skoda Fabia 1.9tdi,
Skoda Octavia Elegance 1.9Tdi very nice car untill a motor bike decided to rearrange it, and try to kill me ,my mum and my son in the process,
Renualt Espace 2.2dci people carrier - not my ideal car but practical at the moment.
I have always love Escorts mainly the earlier ones - i craved Cosworths and xr3i before io could drive.
but now i'd quite like a fabia or an octavia vRS diesel
never done a track day - though would love a rally course.

When I only had my Fiat I always found it was BMW drivers who were trying to bully me out of the way, now I have the Porsche it is Audi drivers that are the pain they always seem to want to race me (or block me)

Hello Trumpeter and welcome. Of course you are most welcome to join in!
If your interested in a track day or a rally course just PM me through my profile!
I know someone with a Fabia VRs who beat a Clio 182 in a race, his other cars' a Bentley Turbo R, yes you read that right a Bentley!
No doubt i'll probably end up with the TVR, i love everything about them! The BMW is a very nice motor though!
Haha! Maybe i'll become a "typical BMW driver" - tips to remember don't indicate and bully Fiats'- though i somehow doubt it.
BMW's seem to brought down by some of the drivers, usually the ones in 318 rep mobiles not those of a high spec. i just think they've got something to prove, quite sad really!
You get Audi's try to race you? Hope you show them how to drive, i bet you didn't expect my GT-4 to be a quicker car than your new Boxster?

Hmm quicker than a rally prepped GT-4 round the twisties? I often go driving with 2 996's, an EvoVIII and a Cerbera, my GT-4 has the edge round the twisty bits though the two 996's have all the advantage on the straights, the Evo's just an awesome machine with 500 BHP, the Cerbera is better than any from 100-150.
I'd definetely agree with you if you were talking about a TVR "V" Boxster round the twisties but a rally prepped GT-4 can be a great car, much underated and people don't always know exactely what it is not like a Scooby or an Evo!
The other factor of course is the driver though, i've not drove a Boxster yet i'm told the handling is fantastic as with any car the handling is only fantastic if you can drive well
How tail happy is the Boxster? I hope you have switched the Traction off to find out!!!!
