In order to help me choosing my next flute...
What do you think of:

1. E ring or E mech

2. Gold head on silver body....how does it look?

3. Inline G, does it help finger positions etc, and is it easy to convert from offset. Any mechanical advantage?

My not-very-expert opinion smile.gif:

1. Not E mech - it's just one thing more mechanical to go wrong, and at your level you probably just don't need it. Plus, doesn't it make some trills more difficult?

2. It might look odd, but I think if it sounds good that's what matters. If your best combination turns out to be gold hj and silver body and you sound great - who cares what it looks like? smile.gif

3. As far as I understand it, inline G was initially purely to make manufacture easier, not for any ergonomic properties. If your fingers fit better round an inline G, then go for it, other than that there is no point. Most people find it more difficult and awkward than offset G. I *think* if anything there is a mechnical advantage in offset G, as the G key is on a different set of bars and pins. But I am not sure of that.

Yes the G is on a different set of pins(I'm pretty sure)

I'm not sure about the E ring - I don't know much about it unsure.gif so I'll leave that up to you

I've seen a gold hj on a silver body and it looks ok! It just looks like the person is wearing orange that is reflecting in the silver!! But really it's not what it looks like is it? Trust your instincts and the quality of the instrument and sound

Personally I would go for offset g because I think inline would be painful and awkward! But have a go at each and see which works best for you!

I'd go for no E mechanism, whichever head/body combo sounds best, and inline or offset depending on your hand size and shape - you'll realise fairly quickly which one works for you.

(So, same as Sarah, really. laugh.gif )

thanks for the replies so far

Ive tried a few inline G flutes, they look nicer ( because the keys are all in a row) but not sure if I could get used to it. The flute mechanism is slightly different so was wondering if there is any advantage.

As for the E mech and E ring, some people find that the E ring works, some say it doesnt.......not sure! ( E mech is more expensive!)

Gold head on silver flute...have a look for yourself....... It sounded amazing on wednesday, need to try it again, but it is a possibility! have a look for yourself......what do you think?!

They do in a way but to be honest aesthetics takes a backseat compared to comfort and not ending up with RSI or something equally hideous!

At your level of ability I doubt you really NEED either.

Honestly, again I think aesthetics is secondary to how the flute feels and sounds in your hands.

I suppose it does look a bit wierd in that picture but never mind! It looks better in real life! Which flutes are you looking at?
