I started the flute when I was 8 so I have been playing for 9 nearly 10 years !!!

Recorder, I started when I was about 7. At the time I just viewed it as a way of getting into playing clarinet and eventually sax. I now play and enjoy all 3 and a few others, but clarinet is my main instrument.

Making up for it now though!

I played the recorder in year 2 for a few sessions as part of a whole class music lesson. So technically is my first instrument, but started flute in year 3 or 4, learning as a group or pair. Didnt learn much in those primary school years....joined secondary school grade 2/3! Done much better since though!

Harmonica - I was about seven when I tried a professional chromatic one and found I could play anything and so my parents bought me one.

Flute at age 13, though I played the recorder at school before.
Though technically voice, as I've been singing all my life. I've never had lessons though, so does that count?

i voted for flute but then remembered i played recorder before that! I gave my recorder away to an instrument appeal for African children - which is good but I miss it sometimes!

I know I put recorder in an earlier post, but I guess voice must've come first (in playgroup, late 1970s).....

I don't ever remember actually learning recorder - I just always seemed to know how to play it. I do remember going through my dad's recorder books so maybe I just taught myself.
Anyway, I started violin at 6 and piano much later at 14.

I started violin at 11, and flute at 15. My parents are rather unsupportive of anything musical, but i wish i had been allowed to learn something from a young age.

I played recorder first, gave it up after about a year and started the piano the year after.
But as many people have said, technically voice is my first and probably wood blocks/shakers/guiro type things at Musical Minors

I started the piano when I was in primary one so I think that was when I was 5 or 6 then recorder at 7/8 then saxophone when I was 13 and flute at 15 (thankfully my prior musical experience made me grade 5 about a week after I started and that has been my main instrument, there are a few other instruments which take a backseat when I'm bust with that...

First came piano (aged 6), 8 saw me pick up the flute, 10 saw me teach myself descant recorder (so I was able to join the Recorder Ensemble, and retain my playing in every group record!), and lots more since!

What? No viola?
Mind you, it does tend not to be first, and I didn't do it first, so it doesn't really matter too much...
