I'm too embarrassed to say but I wondered how many pieces people can play, and at what grade they are now at.

Why are you too embarrassed to say?

Because I've passed grade 8 and there are not that many in mine but my new teacher is helping me a lot with all that. Actually kerioboe, are you embarrassed because you did not say how many you can play either?

I'm not embarrassed, I just couldn't actually decide what "can play" meant.
For example, did you mean pieces which you could just put on the music stand and play to performance standard straight away, those which were at performance standard last year (or in my case some were twenty years ago) and which would need a bit of work to get back up to scratch, those which you could play quite well but never really polished off completely but could if you were motivated for a concert/exam.
Also, I was about to switch the computer off and go to bed. I will mull over the question.

Like you melody amour I have passed grade 8 but don't have a wide repetoire! Now is the time when you start exploring this though and I'm enjoying it!

Hmmm..... obviously not a professional player so probably not as big as some musicians on their websites! But looking at what music I have including full sonatas and concertos and other pieces, I would be happy to perform around 35 pieces...... Doesnt sound like that much!

That sounds good to me, Sags.
I'm thoroughly enjoying it as well, magicflute.

I'm in the same boat as Kerioboe - it depends - know well enough to perform at a concert tomorrow morning, or at a concert next week, or next month, or just "have played to some reasonable level whilst learning my instrument"?
The first couple of categories would narrow it down a lot, although I still can't think off the top of my head of a number, the last category would be literally hundreds.

Melody Amour please can you tell us which of the above you mean.
If I were to be writing a repetoire list for public view then I doubt I would include all the pieces I have ever learnt including all the studies and short pieces up to grade 6ish. Probably only count the core flute repetoire plus other substantial works

I can't play them that well, but the things I can play that are very well known are....
Chopin nocturne in Eb
Chopin Minute waltz
Scubert moment musicaux no 3 (I think)
And I'm about grade 6!!! (I sometimes think I'm grade 4, because my sigtreading is so bad)

Sorry everyone. I should have been a bit clearer. I meant to perform well for something such as a concert today.

Right, that narrows things down a bit... I'll have a think I think I'd have to have a play and see what comes easily to my fingers

Currently, I don't think there are actually any pieces that I could play straight away for a concert and that would be near the top of my ability. Possibly some of my Grade 5 pieces I wouldn't have to look at too much, but most above that I have done for previous grades or that I am not currently working on I would need about a week to look at.

This is a difficult question to answer! um... well i'm a Suzuki girl, so we constantly revise all the pieces in the repertoire, so that's about 90-100 pieces...
I would say also about another 20-30 pieces because I have learnt these other pieces for exams and also to widen my repertoire, due to the fact that the Suzuki books contain baroque and classical pieces only.
I used to learn piano, but my total playable repertoire on that instrument has now been reduced to 1 piece! (I stopped learning 2 years ago

)

I recently timed my half-decent repertoire and came to two conclusions:
1) I could play background music for slightly over two hours
2) I could play for a fairly amateur concert (with some specific practise) for maybe about an hour.

I can perform about 30 properly but there are others that I am always learning and always wanting to try out!
Having said that most of my pieces have been performed in exams!

Ooh.. tricky... Say given a weeks notice I guess could do a half hour concert ... perhaps a bit more... Background music I could drag a friend along and just keep on playing duets/random stuff for ages.....

three from tchaikovsky's The Seasons...a few here and there plus exam pieces (that i think are concert-able) might be around 13? haha, oh god. I'm in Grade 7.

About an hour and a half's worth of song repertoire. Probably around a dozen recorder works which could be played with a little effort to tidy them up. Similar for violin. Only about five piano works - and they'd take a fair bit of time to get ready.

Oh gosh...hard one. Steel pan repertoire is loads - at least 20, probably more. Horn repertoire is surprisingly small - I learn a lot of pieces but at the same time: a) not all of them have actually been performed because solo performance opportunities bar exams tend to be fairly few, so the motivation to polish isn't always there and

what I *could* play is probably different to what I'd be happy to play! For example, I did Mozart 2 mvt 1 for my Grade 8 but I don't think I'd put myself out to play it in public - exam nerves are bad enough, but solo performance nerves are worse for me and it's a precarious piece range-wise to begin with! So I would usually choose something easier.
...Getting to the point, I'd say up to about 10 pieces (counting a movement as a piece) - Mozart 3 complete (3 mvts), Mozart 4 mvt 2, I Got Rhythm, 2 or 3 jazz studies and a couple of West Side Story selections. I could probably get a lot more Mozart and some stuff from musicals up to scratch quickly too.
