I just got a more advanced trumpet to help me with my higher grades. The trumpet is a Bach Stradivarius (had to tell someone that! ) but the case is also 20 yrs old, and smells as though something died in it.

Im worried that some products to get rid of smells may leave a residue that might damage the trumpet!

Does anyone know what i should do?

Oust it! Or put some lavender in the case or something. Or even some Sodium Bicarbonate. (I think that's the right one!) However, I think it is very rare that odors can actually physically manifest to damage the trumpet, apart from making it smell too! If you're truly worried about it, and the trumpet is quite expensive, you could buy a new case, which would be a good investment too! Isn't there some special powder in a bag that they put in violin cases to preserve them or something?

My accordion case still smells - I bought the accordion over Christmas...

Leave it outside for a few hours on a nice day? Might work???

Yuck - might be best to just get rid of it and treat yourself to a new case.

How old is the case itself? Any idea? Presumably not the original!!....... Or is it????!!!!

thanks for the advice, and yes the case is the original as far as im aware (certainly smells like it!).

Leave it open for a week or so, preferably somewhere where it will get some fresh air, and then see if that does the trick. We often use the garage and that works a treat. For example, hubby went to the pub with mates the other evening and came home stinking of ciggie smoke on his jacket (he doesn't smoke). So we hung the jacket in the garage and overnight the smell disappeared.

This is the thing to do. Wait until the better weather, and leave it open in the garden in the sun. Hope you don't have any cats that might think it's a loo though
