I have found just this, I started learning the sax 13months ago and since them I keep finding more instruments I want to learn ph34r.gif

I am currently learning sax, clarinet, dabbling in piano and have just arranged my first proper flute lesson for friday unsure.gif
Has anyone else found this?? Is there a support group for addicts? laugh.gif

I'm not sure it's a support group so much as a 'provoke you to get worse and worse' group. It's lead by Sarah-Flute and Allan (Rosfrog). They're evil and should be avoided at all costs. I swear they're responsible for half the instruments in my house. Honest.

And that barry-clari was trying to encourage me to buy a bassoon last night....
Rosemary7391
Yes, I've found this as wel! Clarinet, Sax, Piano, Oboe, Recorders... Flute when people don't confiscate it mad.gif

Perhaps there sohuld be a support group! Although I did collect all those without the help of Sarah and Allan... *Must stay away*

The basson is a great instrument ph34r.gif

I was fortunate to try one when I was looking for my first instrument but I wanted something in the treble clef cool.gif

I'm thinking of buying a decent recorder now I've attended one sesson of our local recorder group (today) - and decided my tenor is rubbish and my plastic descant very shrill - I feel I have to buy a pearwood one (I think Petrat said pear) , or both... to add to my piano, flute, & that oboe I bought last month (because Malone bought one)...

My instruments are increasing gradually, I go from just messing about on them to having lessons in them and taking exams lol!

Yup, that sounds about right. I'm just taking my collection of string instruments out of cold storage and this is the time I start to wonder whether it wouldn't be a good idea to start learning a woodwind instrument. I mean, surely a recorder (for instance) can't be that expensive and I did enjoy playing it in primary school. And if a recorder, then why not a flute or clarinet? It's a dangerous path to start on tongue.gif laugh.gif
petrat
Recorder addiction is very costly! Don't be fooled! biggrin.gif You will start with a plastic soprano and then decide that a wooden one would sound better, then you will add a wooden alto, then get a plastic tenor because you cannot justify the expence of a wooden one, then you will decide that you want a wooden tenor after all, then you will find a group to play with that needs a bass recorder so you will go for a wooden one straight away rather than make the same mistake that you made with the tenor, then you will decide that you want to play modern solo stuff so will get a modern alto recorder, then you will want a mediaeval copy or two just to see how they play, then you will want a sopranino to play Vivaldi, then you will want a garklein and lastly you will want a massive sub-contra! And then you will go to the Early Music Shop and see some other baroque recorders that you like too and add them to your recorder zoo. And you will end up with a great library of music too. ALL RECORDERS SHOULD CARRY A GOVERNMENT WEALTH WARNING!

I went into our local music shop cafe looking for a cream scone and I came out with a trumpet - I'd always fancied that! When I first starded with wind instruments (excluding recorder) A lovely freind asked if I'd rather learn clarinet or Sax, so I said clarinet and she gave me a sax. I really wanted to learn an instrument I could play in an Orchestra and so I took up the flute, then, when I left school, I wanted to lean the french horn, and so I found one and learnt that and then the trumpet, then I was asked to teach at a local music school and ended up learning the clarinet so I could teach that too. And I play the fiddle because I like the sound of scottish fiddle music. And I'd always wanted an Oboe, I have one of those too now. I also tried the trombone, had a brief couple of years at school on the double bass. And I think thats it. Apart from recorders and piano. I think I will have to stop. My flute teacher said my embouchure will suffer eventually if I do too much, so the Oboe is on sale as is the french horn...I need that Instruments Annonumus too I think. Please help me!!

I think they are pretty likely to stay stashed away.
I only have a descant and a treble.
Fibi
And recorders look so innocuous too. I would never have imagined they were potentially harmful gateway instruments

Be careful Jojo, you leave the cello and the double bass alone in a room overmight, you come back the next morning, and as if from nowhere, there are little 1/2 size violins popping up all over the place - they multiply, I swear it! biggrin.gif
meerkat
Yeah, it's the innocuous looking ones you've got to watch out for. You think 'oh just one little puff, what harm can it do?' Then you have to up the stakes to get the same hit. A little clarinet. Maybe a taste of flute.

Before you know it, you're mainlining bassoons and cellos, and have an impressive stash of baroch instruments just for recreational purposes.

It's a slippery slope, I tell you. A slippery slope.

Don't you need a licence to play more than two at the same time?

Possibly one cure is to carry them round with you on foot. Our local music school is a 15 minute walk away. My daughter can't carry the trombone because it is too heavy for her to carry it that far. She could carry the cello but we walk through a park and she usually runs and has a quick climb on something and I don't fancy her doing that with the cello on her back. So I carry the cello on my back, the trombone in one hand and the oboe over one shoulder and my music bag over the other shoulder. I tried to get her to carry the oboe but the case only has a shoulder strap and I couldn't shorten it enough for it not to trail (read bump) along the ground when she carried it so I gave that idea up too. Fortunately her sister has chosen to play the piano so I don't have to carry that as well but she is talking of when she starts a second instrument - I keep hinting that a flute might be nice (and light to carry).

Meanwhile elder daughter has said what happens when you want to start your third instrument because there is only room on the music school enrolement form for two instruments.

I was ok just playing the piano, and a little bit of guitar, many years ago! smile.gif Then gradually we kept adding to the music room... we got a flute, a violin (and a lovely electric one rolleyes.gif ), clarinet, viola, recorder and cello. They've gradually taken over my life! I go through stages where I play one a lot - it's clarinet at the moment! It's great to have lots of instruments to jam with I think! smile.gif smile.gif I know I'll never be a master of them all, but it's such fun!!!
littlelady87
My aim is to learn one instrument of each type: I've got the percussion and the bowed strings; next is the brass (trumpet maybe) and then woodwind (oboe) and I would LOVE to play harp.

Bassoon- I'm too small for such a big instrument
Cello- I'm too lazy to learn the tenor cleff
brass- Brass instruments are too loud

When I told my husband I was selling my cello, I pointed out that I'd always be able to get another one if I wanted to go back to it. I said this would probably only be in some unlikely situation, such as when we have somehow have a lot of money and don't need to work, and each of my recorders can only get about an hour-per-day use.
I then tacked on that if that were the case, though, I'd probably have a music-room-summer-house in the garden which would have a piano in it. Which also made me wonder where that thought had come from (he wouldn't mind a piano, I think he'd probably want to give it a go as well).

Today, I am mainly finding reasons why I don't need a bass recorder rolleyes.gif (I can't get my upgraded treble or tenor until I sell the cello...but a cheap bass off eBay, well, I MUST keep my eyes open just in case blink.gif )
