I've just got the music for Pamela Wedgwood's piece Rosie which I shall be accompanying for a G3 alto sax exam in a few weeks. I'm wondering what other people make of the combined effect in 4/4 of a crotchet (quarter) = 108 metronome mark and the instruction "Unhurried and relaxed". It seems pretty brisk to me. I do sometimes feel as if composers just stick a pin in the metronome at random! I don't yet know what speed the child involved has been practising at, but I feel that mood would be easier to achieve at something more like 100 or even less. If there's a metronome mark given I always like to take that as my starting point, but don't stick to it if it doesn't seem to allow the music to work.

Before my sax teacher promoted me to grade 4, I was learning this piece. I played it a little faster than that - I have only just put the metronome on at 108. I have a feeling the CD is slightly faster than crotchet = 108. I could be wrong, but I'll let you know tomorrow when someone will be able to bring the CD in for me.

That's interesting. It's not difficult to play the piano part faster but it didn't feel unhurried and relaxed!

(I have been in bed ill for several days - in case you're wondering why I can't get CD now!!)

I'm very sorry to hear that. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Sending "get well" vibes. smile.gif
