This post is just a nosey one to ask everyone which of the hundreds of songs by Schubert is your favourite and why. For me it would be Die Forelle.

Du Bist Die Ruh. Don't know why, just is.
fsharpminor
I have accompanied a lot of Schubert Lieder. Yes I also like 'Du bist die Ruh', and 'An die Musik'
But for a lesser known one I like 'Aufenthalt'.
Another great song, but a stinker to accompany is 'Erlkonig'. My wrist strength to play those repeated octaves is just not up to it !

Der Musensohn

Gott im Fruhling or Nacht und Traume

I only know Die Forelle, Die Bist du Ruhe and Erlkonig but love them all! I studied them for As level. I know what you mean about Erlkonig Fsharpminor, I can see why it is so challenging!

Yes-same for me too. We had the piano score as part of my OU course a couple of years ago. Shame I don't have a male to accompany..... sad.gif

This is bringing back memories. When I was a student I played & analysed a lot of Lieder - never seem to have time nowadays. I remember particularly loving Der Musensohn & the Schone Mullerin songs. Wolf was lovely, too & Schumann.

How hard to pin this down to one song! I suppose I am particularly partial to Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen. I have the Music Minus One accomp, and Mr. Wustman races through it like it's a Motorboat on the water though!

Also love Gretchen Am Spinnrade, albeit she's a bit of a "bunny boiler" and really should be in therapy. I make a right dogs-dinner of singing this, but one day I would love to be able to do it justice.

Du bist die Ruh or Lied eines Schiffers an die Dioskuren, which are both on the grade 8 list (I will be doing the second one, I think when I get round to it!).

I like Musensohn but my face has to be properly warmed up to get the words out! biggrin.gif

Gretchen am Spinnrade and Der Leiermann! smile.gif

I've been trying to make myself like Schubert. Much as I appreciate he was a consummate composer I just can't seem to engage with most of his work.

I do like the first song from Die Schone Mullerin...I can't remember the title, though. And Die Forelle. I think I'm probably just being a heathen and going for the ones that are comparatively really melodic and simple. Heh.

Hmm, just one? Impossible!

Men's songs: Der Wanderer an den Mond, Der Lindenbaum, Die Taubenpost
Women's: Die junge Nonne, Lied der Mignon (Heiss mich nicht reden)
For either: Litanei

The complete Schubert songs are online here: http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/variations/scores/song.html .

I agree An Sylvia is a nice song to sing - sang it for grade 5!

I will have to put Gretchen Am Spinnrade. It's the only one i've had a go at and have accompanied someone singing it at a local festival. I suddenly feel very bad for never having sung any Schubert properly! Oh well, I have time now to catch up smile.gif

I find Gretchen is sung best when one has raging PMT - gives it that slightly manic edge!!! laugh.gif

love Gretchen am Spinnrade...
but going to sing Die Forelle for my singing recital exam this year instead...(9th may, scary!!!)

Hello...am new to this but have been reading them for a while. My favourite is Seiligkeit. I loved singing it and have had two pupils ...boy and a girl...do it for Grade 4 and they both loved it
