Same as Tsax, but also listen to considerable amounts of Van the Man, as my son is a little bit obsessed by him to say the least. I also like funk, soul and classical.

It is healthy to have a wide taste of music. I know one person who only listens to Bach.... nothing wrong with Bach, but, come on!
Your taste is not weird at all!

i think its simply because we have a greater appreciation for most types of music. Why would someone want to listen to just Bach? - don't get me wrong - he's a great composer, but i do see your point, that its better to have a wider variety of music to listen to.

Lots of different things actually. It was difficult to choose an answer, because I'm not sure what I listening to most at the moment - rock/punk/indie type-stuff or classical. Went for other in the end cause I'm listening to a lot of Irish traditional stuff I suppose.

I only really listen to classical... nothing against the other types of music but I don't find it as inspiring as classical. The only music I can't tolerate in the background is trance music- sorry, but who wants to listen to five minutes of non-stop beat and nothing else? Oh, and Britney Spears... If I had to choose anything other than classical it would be soft rock.

Interesting that there are 12 types of 'modern' music, and just one for classical. I guess that's anything 'older than modern', but it's a very huge category!

I listen to all sorts of music. Rock (Queen, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd) Metal (Marilyn Manson, Korn, Disturbed) Acoustic (Johnny Cash, Nick Drake, Willy Mason) Pop (The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Michael Jackson) and Classical (Basically anything)
I would say I am listening to Classical the most at the moment. Mainly Choral and Organ stuff, but I agree with Maize that it is strange you placed Classical as a general topic. Some classical music I am not so keen on, say Chopin, and othr 'classical' music I love, like Bach, Mozart and Byrd.
Interesting topic though!

Classical; I'm a flute player, therefore play alot of this style and it is what I end up listening to most. Also like pop.
Music I like: James Galway's music, Ian Clarke's, Vivaldi, Poulenc, Faure, Showtunes etc.

I mostly listen to classical & have hardly anything else in my collection, but I do have quite a wide variety of things , from Bach & Vivaldi, to Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Messiaen, Prokofiev, Shostakovich (to name some of my favourites).
It's not that I don't like any other kind of music, more that I'm so involved in classical music that I don't think about other kinds very much. I'm quite happy to sing other styles in choir, in fact it's a nice change after many years of standard classical repertoire & I do other styles with my piano pupils if they want to.

Not entirely on-topic but continuing a discussion that has developed on the thread: I'm just back from a concert which included classical (Martinu, Ravel, Bach, Lutoslawski, Turina, Joplin), solo acoustic guitar/vocal, amplified guitar/bass/vocal duo, solo bagpiper and fiddle/guitar duo. Amazing variety of styles and sounds, and everyone - no matter what their perceived favourite was before they came - was delighted by the chance to experience and enjoy such a wide range of music. It was a good lesson.

Nope, if you're going to divide popular into all those categories, you'll have to divide classical into its proper categories, so I can't vote. Besides, there is a lot of difference between what you might listen to most, and what you listen to as a full range...

I tend to (predominantly) listen to classical (in its various genres), perhaps seconded by jazz, but also tend to flick through radio stations when I'm in the car, so I listen to quite a wide range of music really.

A site of this pedigree should really have a stricter definition of the term "classical", which to me indicates music from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Mar 5 2007, 10:09 PM
And should therefore also have closer definitions of all the genre listed!
With modern music there is so much variation that practically every band needs a new genre... And there are so many subgenre within one genre these days...!

I myself have been into Rock n roll, blues, psycobilly,Rockobilly, punk, ska, pop,oi,classical, rock, heavy metal.

At the moment I'm probably mostly listening to pop (i.e. whatever's on the radio) and indie type stuff (love Biffy Clyro's new track...)
Overall my CD collection is mostly indie and emo stuff. Whereas my iPod is emo/indie/dance/pop/r 'n' b/baroque/classical
I just can't make myself listen to jazz, blues or funk. I'm getting used to playing jazzy stuff on my flute though so we'll have to see
I think I'm quite strange in the fact that I rarely listen to albums. I can't imagine sitting there and listening to an album all the way through. I need to listen to different bands and different styles mixed together

that's probably why there's so much different stuff on my iPod. It also means that itunes really suits me - I can just download single tracks that I like

This is yet another poll in which I have not bothered to vote because the categories are so odd. I suspect that the amount of Classical music (Haydn to Beethoven) I listen to is exceeded by the Romantic and possibly by the early 20th C "modernist" composers (no longer modern) such as Stravinsky and Schonberg. I don't know where Medieval, Renaissance or Baroque would rank, but none of these would I switch off just because of the music (I might because of the performance). Then, again, what about Blue Grass, Country and Western or "Bollywood" (Indian popular music)? and it's a bit odd to have Jazz as one category when some people (I am one) have strong preferences within it. I have no great enthusiasm for Trad Jazz, though I might like particular groups; I usually like Swing; I almost always like Bebop, whether big band or small group; I occasionally find myself intrigued by post-Bebop groups such as "Weather Report", though some of its incarnations seemed to get bogged down into a sort of minimalism on which I give up.
