Oh My God please help me and reassure me that there is someone else in this world who is as rubbish as I am with sight reading!

I find it soo hard, and it's a shame because that's what brings my final mark down for every exam!

In grade 7 you have to put dynamics, and even do a bit of pedalling!!

Is anyone else having trouble? And does anyone have any tips for me?

Thank you!!

erm hate to say this but the best remedy is biting the boolet and reading as much new music as possible, even if you read one new piece a day you'll see the effects, get down to the library - take things out then bring them back after you've read them once (twice max! you can only sight-read something once) swap books with ur friends or anything, jsut keep reading new music. You'll find you enjoy it more as you get better at it, it's actually a big adventure reading something new once the psychological prohibition is gone!

What really worked for me was playing through an entire hymn book, doing a few every day. Even though it was painful to begin with, by the end my sight reading had got so much better so it's worth the effort! But you have to make sure you're playing the right notes and not just guessing otherwise it's a waste of time! Good luck smile.gif

yes practice does make perfect. Why don't you try adding in dynamics to simple tunes and gradually progress through to hard melodies!

The best I've ever achieved is 142 in my Grade 3 Piano.

I always find out where a student really is in sight reading - it's often several grades lower than it should be, but that's OK - it gives you a starting point! Find out what grade you can do well & confidently & start practising from the next grade, moving up when you feel you've mastered each grade, including dynamics & style. Do as much as you can over the next 2 weeks & I'm sure you'll come on a lot.

The Paul Harris sight reading books are very good, you might try those. Also just read through as much music as you can - not just sight reading books.

Then keep the practice up long term, so you'll be finding it much easier when you get to grade 8. Keep positive & try to enjoy it. Good luck!

I have trouble with grade 7 sight reading but that makes sense since I am only grade 5.

I'm doing grade 6, and my teacher is nagging me to put dynamics in. It's very difficult sad.gif I can't seem to concentrate on sight-reading the notes and do dynamics

If you are serious enough to get past G5, may I suggest "Clementi's" Gradus ad Parnassum, part one (1)....This study and exercsie book, will give you confidence and good technical sight reading skills if used properly. I have sworn from this book with my pupils over 20 years, and it has encorouged them to LOOK, THINK, ANALYSE and perform with confidence.... But only real practice will help you here, and you are not alone, 8 out of every ten people in exams have in-sufficient sight reading skills, but then again, do you want to be a concert performer, or do you want something that is an achievement........
