I was reminded the other day, when we first moved to Surrey/Kent borders in 1988, we viewed a house in Pratts Bottom. I think we discounted it simply because of the name of the place.
Near to us here now we have Greasby.
But my favourites are Windpassing (at least three of these in both Austria and Germany), and Titz, also in Germany.
For a road name there is Butt Hole Road in Conisborough near Doncaster, and Butt Hole Lane in Shepshed , Leics. (I am sure our Leicester friends will confirm).
Have you come across any funny placenames or road names?

There's a village in, I think, County Durham called No Place. And there's a road called the A55 (snigger).

There's a village in East Anglia called Ugley. Not sure I'd like to live there.

One of Ugley's organisations is the Ugley Women's Institute. Its members became so annoyed with all the jokes about them that they changed its name to "The Women's Institute of Ugley". wink.gif

We have a Butt Lane near to us - dates from the days when it was used by medieval archers for practising their shooting at the "butts"!

There is a farm near us called Boghole. I wander who named that??

Yes, it is the River Piddle...

Ha! I have a friend who lives in Pratts Bottom, fsharpminor! (Only she calls it Halstead rolleyes.gif laugh.gif ).

There is a village in Northamptonshire which used to be called Pisford until the Victorians decided to add a 't' in between the 'i' and the 's' (spoilsports).

Island off the west coast of Scotland called Muck (from the Gaelic muic, meaning pig).

Inclining slightly to the left of on-topicness, there was an old signpost in Lincolnshire which said "To Mavis Enderby and Old Bolingbroke". Someone had written underneath " ... the gift of a son". laugh.gif

Sorry if Im monopolising my own thread,
An office colleague has told me the 'ultimate' is 20 miles NNW of Salzburg in Austria. A good map will find it , but Im not posting it here! Its certainly on my Microsoft Autoroute.

When I was a teenager holidaying in the West Country, I informed my family that we were about to drive through a village with an 'interesting' name. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for the inhabitants, there was a speck of dirt on my map, so what I thought was a 't' was actually an 'r'. The village was called Shirwell. tongue.gif

Foulridge, pronounced 'full-ridge' locally....

I also used to have bother getting the town name 'Clitheroe' past a web censor, it would object terribly to the start of the name.

My friend lives in Jacks Bottom. Think that's the best I can come up with though...
My address actually just sounds comical though rolleyes.gif

Yes- I know both places. Unfortunately, the names are now on seperate signposts because the Council got fed up with people pinching the Ham Sandwich ones!

Don't think I fancy Upper Wallop or Middle Wallop! blink.gif

It would be quite amusing to fly to Butler Memorial Airport, just for the three-letter airport code biggrin.gif. I'm staying away from Buochs Airport in Switzerland though ohmy.gif.
