I am delighted to get 49 posts in a day from a new thread, although a few were mine.
It took a minute for the penny to drop reading Petra's last post, maybe too early in the morning. But it reminded me there is a large town in France called Condom.

I watched a house hunting in France programme yesterday and the couple were being shown around a property in a place called St Jean Le Thomas. laugh.gif

condom - yes, I'd forgotten that one.

We recently spent a few hours in Le Crotoy- which struck me as a rather unattractive name for what is quite a pleasant and unspoilt little fishing village.

Since were now on French ones, there is '####y-Poville' just north of Rouen !

Ah, caught out by the automatic censor.
The first word is pussy with the second letter changed to an i.

There's a place in Durham called "Wide Open".

OK weve had four pages of suggestions , which is the best ?
I vote for my own 'Windpassing'

There is a place in Cambridgeshire called Six Mile Bottom. Apparantly there was a rather 'large' lady lived there a few years ago - bet you can't guess her nickname... biggrin.gif

Oh yes - I was just trying to make it slightly ruder smile.gif

Clap Hill!

Actually, I'm just getting these from our local weather forecaster who one late Friday night did the local forecast with "suggestive" place names on the weather map. Cheeky girl.

see mrbouffant1.blogspot.com for more details..

As it happens, I'm not far from Horne...

I was reminded the other day, when we first moved to Surrey/Kent borders in 1988, we viewed a house in Pratts Bottom. I think we discounted it simply because of the name of the place.
Near to us here now we have Greasby.
But my favourites are Windpassing (at least three of these in both Austria and Germany), and Titz, also in Germany.
For a road name there is Butt Hole Road in Conisborough near Doncaster, and Butt Hole Lane in Shepshed , Leics. (I am sure our Leicester friends will confirm).
Have you come across any funny placenames or road names?

I live near Shepshed, but never actually been. Will ask a friend who lives there. Fluteandbassoon will probably know. smile.gif

Yep, I can confirm that Butt Hole Lane definitely exists - its just a few metres from mine and FAB's school... Have to pass it to get to the town centre. You'd also kind of have to pass by it if you wanted to get to the church, so the regular churchgoers here are probably used to the sight of it - unless they take the detour around! I don't know if anyone actually lives up there or if there are just a bunch of abandoned houses though!

Nobody seems to have mentioned Staines yet

My husband used to joke that the local Scouts were the only ones in the country allowed to have Stain(e)s on their uniforms. They are not allowed to any longer as the district name has been changed to Spelthorne.

There's a Titsey Hill a few miles down the road

Ah - I'd forgotten that one, Maggie!

There's a road called 'The Butts' in Westbury and 'Slag Lane'. Also 'Ticklebelly lane' is somewhere in town, but I'm not sure where.
The Old Lady
Yes, Wyre Piddle is not far from us too. I reckon I wouldn't want to live in Amish country in the USA at a place called Intercourse. blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif
Beverley.

I simply wouldn't want to live anywhere that was TOO FAR from someone I liked . . . sad.gif sad.gif
never mind the name of it.

I've never fancied living in 'Lower Slaughter' in the Cotswalds

I cant find 'Ticklebelly Lane' on Microsoft Autoroute. The nearest it came up with was 'Tickleback Row', which is just out of Bracknell on the north side and parallel with the A3065 Maidenhead Road.

I drive past Terrible Down once a month, mind you there was a tragic accident there recently involving an exploding firework factory and the deaths of two firefighters, so its well and truly earned its name.

I had my photo taken by Sausage Gully in Australia. There were a few choice Gullies there I seem to remember!

Apparently the better off people in Streatham (south London) refer to it as St. Reatham. And Clapham is pronounced "Clahm".

I know someone who lives at:

Cottage Hill Cottage
Cottage Hill Road

Inspired by this, a friend who lives in Stockwell refers to it as St. Ockwell.
