The Old Lady
I'm in the club..........so to speak.
Beverley. Pure Worcestershire with a little bit of Black Country thrown in. smile.gif

For those who don't like Brummies, all I can say is, you are missing out on the kindest, helpful, cheeriest and funniest people on God's Earth.
Beverley,
I am not a Brummie, but have lived amongst them for 27 years, and married one. What awful prejudice. sad.gif

Aha ! I grew up not far from Brum - almost the heart of the black country. Mu mum used to get cross if people said "oh yoo cum from Brum do' ya?" because we were actually quite a little way north. ..

Having lived in the west country, London area and overseas I think I've lost most of it - but it still sounds like "home" if I hear it.

Well I'm a very southern English girly these days and people who meet me from other parts of the country think I'm posh, which I'm really not. tongue.gif It's just going to college in Winchester and living in Hampshire that makes me that way.

When I get incredibly tired or I'm talking to my mum, I tend to lapse into my natural Scottish accent and I've been known to slip bits of Gaelic into conversation without noticing I'm doing it.

Lixandreth ! Mo chara! Am bheil sibh a'tuigsinn Gàidhlig? Tha mi toilichte!

Didn't know we had speakers on the board - that's very cool. (adopts advert style voice)... Scots Gaelic, possibly the coolest language in the world.

It's an excellent sketch, isn't it?

You could just try adding a little gaidhlig to your signature... you have a couple of languages kicking around in there already, surely there's room for one more (sniggers knowing that one word will be all it takes to get her hooked)

chun an fhírinne a rá, ní maith liom Gaeilge mar cuireann na múinteoirí sa scoil brú mór ar na daltaí agus bíonn orainn scéalta agus comhráite a scríobh chun an Teasta Sóisearach Ardlibhéal.

did you like that? smile.gif
(although if my Irish teacher saw that, she would have some things to say about the grammar...)

That's very true actually! A downpour of PM's in Scottish gaelic have been met with pretty darn good approximate translations which floot apparently found on the internet. I, however, was unable to translate any of her Hebrew messages (hangs unworthy linguist head in shame).

Still, we all know she's from Lewis, really... Sarah? I bet her real name is Morag Flootach.

Good!

I like virtually every accent of English in different ways. For example, a strong Essex accent is quite entertaining, while a smooth Irish accent is very relaxing. However, I cannot stand the 'Educated American' accent. Don't know why, it just really grates on me.
ianporsche
To be pedantic- you're actually talking about dialects.

Accents are how a foreign language person speaks English

If I speak perfectly grammatical English but with a Welsh accent that is surely not the same thing as if I were to use phrases that would not be considered to be standard English. If I were to say, for example, "Please can you keep your books for me now" that would be dialect. (Keep your books actually would mean to put one's books away in the correct place!)
Cyrilla
Hmm, yes - I'm no linguist but surely accent and dialect are not the same thing??

Nope, not really. Accent is about vowel production and prosodic variation - this is not the same as dialect which implies syntactic, lexical, pragmatic and sometimes semantic deviation from an imagined norm.

The question is not clear cut, however, and it's quite difficult to isolate just the accent from the dialect as the two often go hand in hand - but accent is merely a part of dialect and not at all the same thing.

We also use the term accent to refer to foreign spoken English, but again only as a part of the dialectal whole (if we want to be truly pedantic, we may consider French accented English to be part of a loose French dialect of English...)

So accent is not the same as dialect when we refer to native speakers, nor is it a term reserved only for foreign speakers.

OK well the proper answers are:-

Dear me , that man over there, he is so very lucky, that if he fell in the toilet, he would come out smelling of roses.

Now you just stop playing about in those puddles, or you will get your feet wet, and I will give you a severe spanking, and with your pants down.

I would just like to relate story my father in law (not a Yorkshireman but from Suffolk) tells when he was in the army. One of his mates was , however from Bradford.
At parade, this mate was pulled up at parade.

Sergeant Major: You, two steps forward, what is your name?
Reply: 'Arrison , sir
SM: Oh yes 'arrison, and 'ow do you spell that , 'arrison ?
Reply; Sir, a haitch, a hay , two har's , a hi, a hess , a ho and a hen, Sir!
