Beverley,
I am not a Brummie, but have lived amongst them for 27 years, and married one. What awful prejudice.

Aha ! I grew up not far from Brum - almost the heart of the black country. Mu mum used to get cross if people said "oh yoo cum from Brum do' ya?" because we were actually quite a little way north. ..
Having lived in the west country, London area and overseas I think I've lost most of it - but it still sounds like "home" if I hear it.

Well I'm a very southern English girly these days and people who meet me from other parts of the country think I'm posh, which I'm really not.

It's just going to college in Winchester and living in Hampshire that makes me that way.
When I get incredibly tired or I'm talking to my mum, I tend to lapse into my natural Scottish accent and I've been known to slip bits of Gaelic into conversation without noticing I'm doing it.

I like virtually every accent of English in different ways. For example, a strong Essex accent is quite entertaining, while a smooth Irish accent is very relaxing. However, I cannot stand the 'Educated American' accent. Don't know why, it just really grates on me.

To be pedantic- you're actually talking about dialects.
Accents are how a foreign language person speaks English

If I speak perfectly grammatical English but with a Welsh accent that is surely not the same thing as if I were to use phrases that would not be considered to be standard English. If I were to say, for example, "Please can you keep your books for me now" that would be dialect. (
Keep your books actually would mean to put one's books away in the correct place!)

Nope, not really. Accent is about vowel production and prosodic variation - this is not the same as dialect which implies syntactic, lexical, pragmatic and sometimes semantic deviation from an imagined norm.
The question is not clear cut, however, and it's quite difficult to isolate just the accent from the dialect as the two often go hand in hand - but accent is merely a part of dialect and not at all the same thing.
We also use the term accent to refer to foreign spoken English, but again only as a part of the dialectal whole (if we want to be truly pedantic, we may consider French accented English to be part of a loose French dialect of English...)
So accent is not the same as dialect when we refer to native speakers, nor is it a term reserved only for foreign speakers.
