Can there be a forum concert in Cornwall/Devon please?

I'd love to in one, but the recent ones are too for away for me...

How many people on this forum live in cornwall?

I know Boo does, I think Emma C does...?

Before a concert can happen in an area, we need two things:

1. Enough people prepared to travel to it to make it viable. Pretty roughly that means between 15 and 20 people prepared to make the trip on the day the venue's available.

2. A local organiser prepared to find out a good venue and negotiate a reasonable hire fee. Almost everywhere, locals tend to get "community" rates whereas an outsider will be charged commercial rates.

If we can find both of these, then we may well be in business.

I tend to find, though, that I get a lot of "I want a concert" messages (on and off board) from people who want everyone to come to them but aren't prepared to travel anywhere else. I'm more likely to be sympathetic to a request for help setting up an activity from someone who's made the effort to support others' activities.

Yes sad.gif I know what you mean, but my mum/dad wouldn't drive/sit on a train for 3/4 hours to woodford just for a forum concert(they wouldn't even understand what a forum concert is). sad.gif

2 more years to go untill I can go to woodford on my own...(that's the closest place)

I live in cornwall I would be probably be prepared to attend one but I simply don't have the time to organise one because I'm sure it is a difficult task to undertake.

I think someone else lives in cornwall or devon - is it frederic chopin?! Don't take my word for it...!

Just because this year's events are in Leeds, Leicester and Woodford doesn't necessarily mean that these will be the only places forum concerts will ever be held. It may well be that other towns and cities will hold events in the months/years to come....

As katyjay has said, it depends largely on how many people can make a particular date/venue, and there being someone local willing to organise the event.

I don't know any many forumers who live in the 'south west' area.
Oddball
I'm prepared to chip in time & travelling to jointly organise a concert with someone. I'm from West Wilts - anyone interested send a PM my way.
sarah-flute
Depends where you consider South West - I'm not THAT far away (would def. consider traveling to Cornwall) and I know there are at least a couple towards Bristol/Bath... plus a few in Cornwall.

I don't know how much help I could be from here but I'd want to support a SW concert if I possibly could.

I can't at the moment, but definitely have it in mind to hold something near me (probably a more informal play-day with an impromptu concert than a "proper" concert though) one day!
magicflute
I think somehwere like Bristol/bath is a better idea. It's more central and easier to get to for people all over the place - wales southwest and south east too i suppose. Also I'm going to uni in bath next year!! But it does need someone to take responsibility of the whole thing!
Oddball
Trouble is with Bath, is that everything's qutie expensive...I don't know anywhere around here that's very good (apart from perhaps my old school hall, but I'll look into that).
petrat
Just a thought but would the organising of a forum concert or get together form a useful part of, and count towards the Duke of Edinburgh's Award? One of my pupils helps me at tinies' music club every Saturday morning as a part of her bronze award.

Oddball
I suppose it could fall under the Service category...
sarah-flute
Yes, somewhere a bit more central would probably have more takers.

My idea for a venue was my church - big hall with a nice acoustic and capable of holding quite a few people, plus 3 or so smaller rooms (which can be subdivided) and 2 pre-fabs. My problem is 1) I just don't have the oomph to organise it at the moment (haven't even managed to find out if it would be possible from the peops there) and 2) the transport links aren't that great as the train station is still some 12 miles away, and I have no means to pick people up so it would involve a certain amount of lugging instruments on buses or using taxis... sad.gif

Is Bristol cheaper? Think public transport would be better to Bristol too. smile.gif
Oddball
Westbury has a good church, with an organ cool.gif, a grand piano (admittedly not excellent), good acoustics, and quite a bit of space.

I don't know much about Bristol, any venues or anything...are there any Bristolians around?
barry-clari
One other thought... If all you West Country folk decide that a forum concert may work, check the forum event calendar to ensure you aren't going to book a date too close to other forum events. 2007 is now getting very crowded, with events either booked or proposed into the autumn now.....

What does everyone think about the Taunton area - is it too far down?

It's just over a couple of hours from London by train, and with an early-ish start, is do-able in a day. smile.gif

But do any forumites come from the Somerset area?......
The Old Lady
Taunton sounds good. Easily accessable from the M5. As is Bath and Bristol.
Beverley.

I was thinking it's about half-way between Cornwall and Bristol. Also, I've got friends in Taunton and I was thinking they might know a venue - and *maybe* help organise it if nobody else stepped forward to organise an event elsewhere wink.gif (It wouldn't be this year though)

Certainly it sounds like a good possibility for the future skylark. smile.gif

There is some really pretty countryside only a few minutes drive from Taunton... smile.gif

Actually, I'm in Bristol - organising a forum concert would be something I would consider in the future (if others are willing to help out), but not this year - sorry! sad.gif

I'm afraid that the same applies to me! I simply cannot make an investment of time or money this year although as anyone who remembers the 'Cornish Forum Concert' thread will know, I would love to arrange one (and nearly did but for my brother's wedding) with pasties and home made cream teas included in the price. Maybe later in the year will be slightly less hectic, we'll have to see. smile.gif

Violinia is in Bath - have you asked if she might be interested?
