Pianiste
I have been given the job as pianist in my school jazz band and our teacher says he would like me to play a solo! Please could you recommend some good jazz pieces for solo piano that I could try! I can play up to around grade 7/8 classical piano and am really getting into the style of jazz a lot more! Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you

Don't know if you are still looking for ideas, but if so............
I am classically trained but also like to play a bit of jazz. I really like lots of the tunes in a book called "the genius of George Shearing" - which contains amongst other things "Blue Moon", "Lullaby of Birdland" (my favourite) and Just The Way you Are (original by Billy Joel). It's published by Wise Publications ISBN 0.86001.723.0
Also - what about "I wish I Knew How it Feels to be Free" - Billy Taylor (The music from the TV prog "Film Night"
If you want to play something more contemparary, what about "What a difference a day Makes" - Jamie Cullum.
Hope this helps. wink.gif

If you haven't done so already I'd recommend getting a Bill Evans book, and learning some pieces from there! Also have a crack at some Herbie Han######, and of course, it's definitely worth learning some stride piano and ragtime stuff - Scott Joplin anyone? biggrin.gif I'd also suggest McCoy Tyner, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Smith (more soul really) Horace Silver, Bud Powell, Chick Corea..
