Somebody who is thinking of coming to the Leeds concert has asked me what sort of music do people play, and in particular, is it OK to play an exam piece
The short answer is that you can play whatever you like - the main thing is to choose something which you enjoy playing and would like to share with other people. This might well be an exam piece - in fact if you've an exam coming up, it's a very good opportunity to get experience performing an exam piece in public. On the other hand, some people like to take the opportunity to get away from exam pieces and play some of their favourite music, which could be anything from baroque to jazz. It's entirely up to the individual

I've also been asked if it matters that the piece might be considered to be too easy and basic by more advanced players. The answer to that is that it's definitely not a problem! I'm sure I must speak for other concert goers when I say that as an audience, we appreciate different performances for different reasons. Of course advanced playing is wonderful to hear (I'm really tempted to take up the flute after hearing the flautists at Leicester

) but it's also GREAT to share in the triumph of a beginner player who has taken the plunge and made their first public performance

It doesn't matter that the piece is a Grade 1 piece or whatever - it's just good to be able to share the pleasure of music-making with an adult who has discovered music for the first time or returned to it after a long break.
It's much better to play something relatively easy that you're comfortable with playing, than to tackle something difficult and struggle with it. And in any case, nice music doesn't have to be complex - I still enjoy playing a piece that is probably pre Grade 1, just because it's lovely music
