I have a back ache after playing the piano for a long time what can I do about it???
La_Chopiniste_
Is your seat well adjusted?
Oddball
Make sure your posture is good - straight back, no hunched shoulders etc. It can be easy to slip into a curved back - I do it a lot. Nip it in the bud, it makes it better in the long run...

Is the stool too high? Is it an upright or a grand you play? Stools need to be at different heights for different pianos.

I get this all the time!!!

I really need to learn to sit up straight!

I think it's the only way to really go about it - keep reminding yourself to sit up straight, and it'll become easier.

I suppose you could get a post it note and stick it somewhere on your piano, reminding you.

Yeah, I get backache quite often. I think there's something wrong with my posture...
La_Chopiniste_
Yes, and please don't practise for a very long time without even standing up for a moment and stretching your back.

For a while there I was getting very bad sciatica, and I think it was to do with leaning more towards one side than the other at the piano. If you're tired, sometimes you don't sit properly and need to take a wee break.

It's probably due to bad posture. I don't have back ache but I got pain in my shoulders and hands because of it. Seems bad posture can cause all sorts of problems.

If it doesn't go you should see a doctor about it. It's better to get someone to check it so you don't do any permanent damage.

I get back aches and shoulder pains very often while playing the piano. I have to make sure to sit up straight and not to play for a very long stretch of time. It also helps to do some stretching exercises.

Yes it helps to stretch regularly but you really need someone to watch you play and see what you are doing that is causing the pain (because the pain might be referred from tension in arms, neck or shoulder).

Alexander technique can be fantastic for musicians. See if you can find a local practitioner. Sessions are expensive but it is something you can learn to do and then it is a skill you have with you for life.

Good luck
