hmm, that seems a VERY brave thing to do to me. My daughter has just passed her G7 trombone with 90% (Distinction) scoring maximum marks on one piece, 19 out of 22 for the other 2 and full marks for her aural but we wouldn't DREAM of moving on to G8 next term even though she can make a very decent attmept at at least two of the pieces. What about consoldating technique and perhaps learning your scales? There are an awful lot more scales at G7 than G5.

I would agree with that but didnt want to sound too grim. There's a big leap between 5 and 7. You have to know the major and minor scales for every key - including both forms of minor. I'm a scales freak but it's taking some work!! Not only that, but the performances need to be a LOT more musical and have solid technique for grade 7, whereas you can get away with a lot more at grade 5. Many grade 7 pieces require more extended techniques such as fluttertonguing which is worth working on.

He didn't actually say that he's going to take the grade 7 exam next term though. So he might well be going to work for it slowly, while exploring other repertoire and technical work alongside his exam work.

If you look at this post in the General Music Forum, he makes it clear that he hasn't taken the exams yet for several of the grades he lists in his signature, so it seems to be more like the "working for" list in yours, just that he doesn't make it very clear in his signature that that's the case.
As he's working for exams in quite a few things, he's probably not going to be able to take them ALL next term, so some might be intended for November or even later. I know my teachers would go loopy if I tried to do 5 music exams in one session - they were anxious enough when I did 3.

I dont think they reflect your ability at all, because its a very different situation to a normal concert or something.
I only have grade 6 piano (distinction), but i'm more like grade 8 piano now, and can play everything on the requirements list, and i can also play a wide range of grade 8ish music, and with flute, I have only have grade 5 (distinction), but can play grade 7ish music fairly well. Although, i may be doing grade 6 organ, but im a terrible organist, so if i got the grade 6, it probably wouldnt reflect my playing as a whole, which is why i dont want to take the exam until i know i actually deserve to get grade 6 organ officially, as i dont want to get it if it's a "fake" that doesnt reflect me as a whole.(if that makes sense!)

Congrats everyone who got their results. Got my Grade 5 Oboe results yesterday. I did so badly in my exam that I was sure I had failed but luckly I didn't. I got 111. Completely failed my scales. 9 out of 21. I couldn't believe how badly they went.

Man, everyone gets such good results. I skipped grade 1 violin, got 121 for grade 2, 105 for 3 wacko.gif , 110 - 4 unsure.gif and 105 again for 5 ohmy.gif *sigh* maybe one day I will get a decent mark.

well done to you all though.

happy.gif Aw all those marks are amazing! As long as you did your best and enjoyed yourself it's cool! smile.gif The only distinction I got was grade 1 piano. Bah! tongue.gif And I've finished my Grade 7 piano and awaiting results. This time - I'll be lucky to pass! But well done on the results! smile.gif

Thanks!!! I always freak before (and during my violin exams! tongue.gif )
Hope you get a great mark on your grade 7!!! I'm sure you've done fine happy.gif

grade 7 Flute
Grade 6 Theory
Grade 6 Organ
Grade 3/4 Clarinet (hoping to do grade 3 soon!)
Bit of Cello, Recorder and Drums

Just to make things clear...
I have:
Grade 6 piano (distinction), but i am doing grade 7 in june, and i am grade 8 standard
Grade 5 flute (distinction), but i am now working on grade 7, and will probably take it in March 2009, because i may be about grade 6/7 standard flute, but i want to spend some time looking at a wider range of repetoire etc.
Grade 6 theory (pass), and i dont have any plans to take higher grades for a while, because my theory isnt too good, but i would like to take grade 8 theory before the end of year 11.
grade 6 organ- I dont actually have any grades in organ, but im working towards grade 6, but dont plan to take it for a while, because i am self taught, and want to make sure i know what i'm doing before i take it! I'm hoping to get a teacher in september
Grade 3 clarinet- I have no grades in clarinet either, but I'm about grade 3/4 standard, and have been playing since christmas, and i hope to take grade 3 in June along with my grade 7 piano.
Cello- Im awful, and i just play basic stuff, but my mum is going to start teaching me, and she reckons that i could take possibly grade 3 next year.
Recorder- I can play recorder, but you wouldnt want to hear me play, seeing as i hardly ever play it, and i have no intentions of taking any grades!
Drums- my brother plays, and he has taught me stuff, and i can play all of his old grade 1 rock school stuff, and i can play a number of simple beats, but thats it, and i dont want to take exams in drums either!

Maybe i should make my signature more clear! smile.gif

I'm sure it won't be long now. I expect with Easter in between things are taking a bit longer than usual, but it's rare to have to wait more than 4 weeks. Hope your results are wonderful smile.gif

I think that possibly you should to avoid any confusion; you signature is somewhat misleading given your explanation. Generally when people say they are 'Grade X' in something, I expect them to have taken and passed the exam. Those who haven't, usually term themselves to be 'Grade X standard'

David

I changed my signature! smile.gif
Jacob, 15(year 10)

Working on:
Grade 7 piano (grade 6 distinction)
Grade 7 flute (grade 5 distinction)
Grade 6 organ
Grade 3 clarinet

Grade 6 theory, might do grade 7 soon.
Also plays cello, recorder, and drums

I can see how it might have been a bit misleading! smile.gif

Finally found out my results yesterday for grade 8 percussion (taken on 11th March), and I got 134, so I'm very happy! It took ages to find out, though.
Boon Hee
did my grade 8 practical piano on 5th March, got results by post on 12th April. on-line was two days earlier I got my score.
bach prelude and fugue in A flat 25/30 marks, mozart K309 23/30 marks, chopin nocturne F minor 26/30 marks. sight read 17/21 marks, scales 19/21 marks, aural 14/18 marks.
124/150 merit. i am happy cos' i did the exam prep by myself.

Finally got my Grade 8 piano results last Friday (from 20th March) and I passed with merit! Very pleased as I totally messed up the Mozart and some of my scales (and the last exam I took was G7 24 years ago!). Now planning for DipABRSM..............

Waaaaahhhhhhh just found out I got grade 8 distinction...in SINGING....with 133....

I'm completely shocked as I've only had singing lessons since September and had no idea of standard or anything and assumed I would get maybe a low pass.......seriously it's ridiculous......
