hmm, that seems a VERY brave thing to do to me. My daughter has just passed her G7 trombone with 90% (Distinction) scoring maximum marks on one piece, 19 out of 22 for the other 2 and full marks for her aural but we wouldn't DREAM of moving on to G8 next term even though she can make a very decent attmept at at least two of the pieces. What about consoldating technique and perhaps learning your scales? There are an awful lot more scales at G7 than G5.
I would agree with that but didnt want to sound too grim. There's a big leap between 5 and 7. You have to know the major and minor scales for every key - including both forms of minor. I'm a scales freak but it's taking some work!! Not only that, but the performances need to be a LOT more musical and have solid technique for grade 7, whereas you can get away with a lot more at grade 5. Many grade 7 pieces require more extended techniques such as fluttertonguing which is worth working on.
He didn't actually say that he's going to take the grade 7 exam next term though. So he might well be going to work for it slowly, while exploring other repertoire and technical work alongside his exam work.
If you look at this post in the General Music Forum, he makes it clear that he hasn't taken the exams yet for several of the grades he lists in his signature, so it seems to be more like the "working for" list in yours, just that he doesn't make it very clear in his signature that that's the case.
As he's working for exams in quite a few things, he's probably not going to be able to take them ALL next term, so some might be intended for November or even later. I know my teachers would go loopy if I tried to do 5 music exams in one session - they were anxious enough when I did 3.

I dont think they reflect your ability at all, because its a very different situation to a normal concert or something.
I only have grade 6 piano (distinction), but i'm more like grade 8 piano now, and can play everything on the requirements list, and i can also play a wide range of grade 8ish music, and with flute, I have only have grade 5 (distinction), but can play grade 7ish music fairly well. Although, i may be doing grade 6 organ, but im a terrible organist, so if i got the grade 6, it probably wouldnt reflect my playing as a whole, which is why i dont want to take the exam until i know i actually deserve to get grade 6 organ officially, as i dont want to get it if it's a "fake" that doesnt reflect me as a whole.(if that makes sense!)

Jacob, 15(year 10)
Grade 7 Piano (grade 8ish though)
grade 7 Flute
Grade 6 Theory
Grade 6 Organ
Grade 3/4 Clarinet (hoping to do grade 3 soon!)
Bit of Cello, Recorder and DrumsJust to make things clear...
I have:
Grade 6 piano (distinction), but i am doing grade 7 in june, and i am grade 8 standard
Grade 5 flute (distinction), but i am now working on grade 7, and will probably take it in March 2009, because i may be about grade 6/7 standard flute, but i want to spend some time looking at a wider range of repetoire etc.
Grade 6 theory (pass), and i dont have any plans to take higher grades for a while, because my theory isnt too good, but i would like to take grade 8 theory before the end of year 11.
grade 6 organ- I dont actually have any grades in organ, but im working towards grade 6, but dont plan to take it for a while, because i am self taught, and want to make sure i know what i'm doing before i take it! I'm hoping to get a teacher in september
Grade 3 clarinet- I have no grades in clarinet either, but I'm about grade 3/4 standard, and have been playing since christmas, and i hope to take grade 3 in June along with my grade 7 piano.
Cello- Im awful, and i just play basic stuff, but my mum is going to start teaching me, and she reckons that i could take possibly grade 3 next year.
Recorder- I can play recorder, but you wouldnt want to hear me play, seeing as i hardly ever play it, and i have no intentions of taking any grades!
Drums- my brother plays, and he has taught me stuff, and i can play all of his old grade 1 rock school stuff, and i can play a number of simple beats, but thats it, and i dont want to take exams in drums either!
Maybe i should make my signature more clear!

Jacob.
