I did grade 5 flute the other day with trinity guildhall, and i passed with 87/100 (distinction!)
Music hall: 21/22
Suite antique- Chanson: 22/22 (I was very shocked by that!)
Andersen study no.18: 18/22 (shocked by that too, cos i was awful!)
Scales: 8/14 (not brilliant)
Sight reading: 9/10
Aural: 9/10
Total: 87/100
Jacob.

Well done!!
But why does your sig say Grade 7 flute if you only just did grade 5?
because i'm now doing grade 7 flute now.
I turned up to my lesson the day after my exam, and my flute teacher goes "lets do grade 7 shall we?", just randomly, and we went through what pieces to look at! all seemed rather sudden actually!
for grade 7 (trinity guildhall), im doing:
sonata in C HWV 365 by Handel (larghetto and allegro)
Romance for flute op.37 by Saint-saens
and we havent picked a third piece yet!
Jacob.

hmm, that seems a VERY brave thing to do to me. My daughter has just passed her G7 trombone with 90% (Distinction) scoring maximum marks on one piece, 19 out of 22 for the other 2 and full marks for her aural but we wouldn't DREAM of moving on to G8 next term even though she can make a very decent attmept at at least two of the pieces. What about consoldating technique and perhaps learning your scales? There are an awful lot more scales at G7 than G5.
I would agree with that but didnt want to sound too grim. There's a big leap between 5 and 7. You have to know the major and minor scales for every key - including both forms of minor. I'm a scales freak but it's taking some work!! Not only that, but the performances need to be a LOT more musical and have solid technique for grade 7, whereas you can get away with a lot more at grade 5. Many grade 7 pieces require more extended techniques such as fluttertonguing which is worth working on.
I know it sounds a bit rushed, but my teacher knows what he's doing, so if he thinks im ready for grade 7, then why not!? I'm not planning on taking it until march 2009 though, because i dont want my piano to clash with flute (like it did when i had grade 5 piano and grade 3 flute, and the school young musician of the year competition all on the same day!!! ARGHH!)
I've seen the grade 7 TG flute scales, and there are a lot, but i know a fair few of them already, and i can play them all on the piano, so i have a good understanding of what they should SOUND like, its just playing that lovely top C in C major 3 octaves that im not too keen on!
I can already play the romance pretty well, because i've had the music for a while. the only bit im not very good at is the big chromatic scale at the bottom of the first page! I can also play the Handel quite well, but certainly no way near performance standard!
I'm not brilliant at flutter tounging (i can only do it when my flute teacher makes me laugh while playing, and i do something that sounds like it by accident!), but i can double tongue just about (although its not even all the time!), and am having a go at triple tounging, but i cant do the wierd sing while you play thing!
KixMusic, well done to your daughter! thats a fantastic result!

Morgan's Munchkin, good luck with your grade 7 flute!

Jacob.
