Why don't we all teach someone else a little bit of another language during the summer holidays, so it doesn't mess up exams for those who are taking them? We could have a thread for each...

Oooooh I like that idea!

We must easily be able to have French, German, Spanish, Russian... Various forms of Chinese... Arabic I think? (between native speakers and learners) - even some Hebrew (I believe there is at least one person who speaks it even though she doesn't write it)... *thinks* - Japanese...

DF, I only learned French properly at school, with a very small smidgen of German and a sprinkle of Spanish, and now look at me laugh.gif so if languages float your boat then you have plenty of time to learn all the esoteric ones smile.gif

Cześć!

Ooh I look forward to it!! Wow, love the idea of a smidgen of German and a sprinkle of Spanish lol tongue.gif

Rosemary7391
I can do German and Spanish for starters.. Perhaps not as interestng as the non latin alphabet languages but its a start! We should get Allan here.
sarah-flute
Oh and we have several speakers of Gaelic of various types - Irish and Scots for sure.

I'll go email Allan....
Rosemary7391
Hehe Excellent!! When shall we kick this off?
sarah-flute
I guess after language exams are finished is fairest. The only exception that I can think of, is if it would be helpful for those STUDYING the languages FOR exams to have to be trying to explain things to non-speakers of those languages (and I guess it may be good revision for people just to talk in those languages). Then those who weren't learning those lingos would have to exercise self-restraint in not looking into language threads of new languages if they thought it was going to confuse them!

We'd have to find out what languages people were taking exams in (Spanish, French, German are the obvious 3 that I am certain people are being examined in but there are probably others) and also be organised as to how to spot the language learning threads - make sure they had recognisable titles - to help us linguist freaks out smile.gif

Ancient Greek and Latin may also have enough learners now I come to think of it! laugh.gif
Rosemary7391
Well my last language exam is the 12th of June - thats German and Spanish over by then, GCSE and A level too I tihnk. I can check French too.
sarah-flute
May be worth asking around just to check.

Just to be vaguely on topic: confession... I'm far from indiscriminate, but still well aware that some will probably think it's naff... I LOVE good country and western music *grin*
Malone
I have a confession to make too... Been a bit of a tube really (as a freind so kindly put it!) And the reason I dyed my hair was because I was led to beleive that all people from the 1930s had dark hair. I was later reminded by my dad, that all the photos were in black and white. ph34r.gif

Been a bit of a tube really ...

Explanation for English types: "tube" is an expression of contempt in these parts, several degrees up the scale from "numpty". Visitors would be well advised not to go around mentioning the YouTube website unless they want first-hand experience of what the term "Glasgow kiss" means.
sarah-flute
Ahhh. Hadn't come across that. *mental note about youtube...*

Are you planning to post translations for the non-foreign language speakers amongst us?

Are languages like children, once you've got three or four, the rest are much easier?

I got a Cd from the library to learn Portugese, had it in the car for a couple of months, but prefer singing along to country music.

Somehow I am not surprised wink.gif

Word to the wise, if you ever find yourself living with a Russian family, you will never need to say "I'm hungry" but it's wise to stock up on as many synonymous phrases for "I'm full" as you possibly can wink.gif

I'm Ian...

And guess what - I wanna be straigght!

I wanna be straight!

I'm sick and tired of taking drugs and staying up late!

I wanna confirm...

I wanna conform...

I wanna be safe and I wanna be snug and I wanna be warm!

Tell me about it. The work "nemonoshka" - a little - will also come in handy. Stock up on phrases like "A smaller piece of cake!" for breakfast, too.... laugh.gif

Woah....all this language talk is confusing me. I only ever did french, and dropped that after yr 9.

I have a big confession to make: *whispers*

There's a good chance that I'm being admitted to an adolescent unit and I am terrified :/

Talking of them, we had a banana just before we went to the Lake District, so my mum put it in the car. As a result, we ended up taking a banana to and from the Lake District in our car without once touching it!

Bananas will soon be extinct I reckon. We must look after them as best we can. There is also a lentil drought and there will be very few (if any) imports this year I heard. So stock up..

Cucumbers are already extinct. The cucumber-shaped -coloured -smelling -tasting items you see in shops nowadays are in fact genetically modified hamsters. This has been the case since August 2001, but it was all hushed up at the time.

For those who are unaware, an adolesent unit is a bit like a mental hospital for self destructive teenagers, only they try to make it sound nicer by calling it a unit!!

Sorry if you have been offended MM ph34r.gif I've been upgraded from Psychotherapist up to Psychiatrist so hopefully more useful smile.gif
Have you seen the film: Girl, Interrupted? You might enjoy it, I certainly did, and made me feel less lonely.

No offence taken smile.gif

The amusing thing is that I'm seeing about 6 mental health specialists, and at the moment the person helping me the most is my music teacher at school.

Haven't seen the film but will try and get a copy of it.

Best of luck, MM. The younger sister of one of my students has attended somewhere similar and they helped her a huge amount.
