here's a question that i thought would be really interesting. do you think that the performance of classical music is...

increasing
decreasing
staying the same
liebe_klavier
it's very hard to say... people know more about it...but most of the young people still can't accept classical music performances...saying that they're boring
jaime
hello

it's hard to say, i would say that it is staying the same. if you think of it compared to modern music performances one would think that it is dying out but, it is the amount of classical performances compared to the amount of modern genre performances that makes one think that classical perforances are decreasing. because modern music is sought after more there will obviously be more concerts of that kind, and less classical because there is less of a demand. this is why i think people believe classical is dying out, just because there isnt the same amount of modern genre performances as there is classical.

however as stupid as it may seem, classical hasn't totally been abandoned. i dont know whether you've noticed but classical is soooo creeping into modern music, whether it just be layered into a song or be of the neo classical persuasion??? classical music isnt a loss, it is just being used differently.

sorry about all that babble........ does anyone else agree with me??? (if you understand a word of it?)

thanks

yeah i agree. Have u noticed there seem to be more strings invovlved in pop songs? Classical Crossover seems quite popular as well but to be honest, I'm not a fan of it!

Being an enormous fan of classical music, I think it has become more readily available to a larger public, thanks to media increase. Concerts no longer belong to the elite in England, (I wish the same could be said for France !). The development of musical education in England means that a wider spectrum of the English population are aware of the benefits of music, the children who first hear classical music at an early age then go on to have a better understanding of it in later life, and grow up with it as part of thier lives.

The sterotype that anyone who listens to classical music is a boring person with nothing better to do. Although people at school critised me for listening to classical when they said said "pop and rock and stuff is like, so much cooler". Until I pointed out that pop stands for popular, and classical is a very popular type of music, therefore could be classed as pop rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Difficult to answer this question. Classical music once meant music of the classical era, now it means whatever you want it to mean. For example, is the American avant garde of the 50s classical or not? If you class Bob F Graetttinger as a "classical" computer - his music embraces orchestral jazz as well as serial technique and classical structures - then is his chief preformer, Stan Kenton, classical, given the compositional demands of the era? Is Bernstein classical?

I think that its staying the same, although I think that classical music is slowly creeping in. I was listening to a piece of pop music earlier and I could hear the strings playing.
Helen
I would have thought so

It all depends on what we class as "classical" music. do you mean music of the classical period (Mozart, Haydn) or do yu mean any music viewed as not pop, or classical music is exclusively orchestral based music.

I personally feel that classical music has a bigger profile now than it did thirty years ago, thanks to the increased profile of the "BBC Young Musician of the Year" competition, the growth of publicity of National Orhcestras such as the National Youth Orchestras of Great Britain, Wales, Ireland and the National Schools Symphony Orchestras, the growth of music colleges with 10 that spring to mind :Royal College, Royal Academy, Royal Northern, Royal Holloway, Trinity, Guildhall, Royal College of Wales, Birmingham Conservatoire, Royal Scottish Academy, Leeds College of Music.

Also, I think that the biggest development of "classical" or orchestral based music is that of Film music. Huge scores from films such as Lord of the Rings trilogy, Harry Potter films, Star Wars, James Bond, Indiana Jones, The Pianist, Brassed Off, Hilary and Jackie etc.
The lists go oo and on.

It all depends on what you class as "classical" music. Do you mean music of the classical period, non-popular music, or exclusively orchestral based music.

Classical music as grown in many directions, three of which spring to mind;

Music colleges;
I can instantly think of ten major colleges in the United Kingdom;
Royal Academy, Royal College, Royal College of Wales, Royal Northern College, Royal Holloway, Royal Scottish Academy, Trinity, Guildhall, Birmingham Conservatoire, Leeds College of Music. As there are more and more music colleges, and universitites with increasingly better music deptarments, music students are growning in both numbers and standard.

Orchestras;
There are increasing numbers of orchestras outside of the conty youth orchestra structure in the UK along, such as;
National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Ireland, Wales, the National School Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Chorus etc.

Film music;
In my view, the future of orchestras and classical music is in that of film scores. Films such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Hilary and Jackie, The Pianist, Brassed Off etc are growing in number with highly skilled composers such as John Williams writing incredible scores. Also the growth of musicals means that more of the general public are becoming "cultured" in music played by "traditional" electronic instruments.

hopes this adds to the discussion.
