I had my Grade 6 piano exam today. Very pleasant (very young!) examiner, warm room but my hands were still very cold and yes, i duly ate my banana before hand! I suffered from nerves as this is only my second exam (did grade 3 last year) and was in a different centre, but there was a lovely lady on the door who made me laugh. Piano was ok too.
My scales were ok ish - in a few places I hit the wrong note and my 7th starting on Dsharp just didn't happen right at all - my mind just went totally totally blank and I completely forgot the second note was fsharp! Chromatics, thirds, contrary motions and appregios I think went well.
My pieces were ok, only about three wrong notes overall and one piece I played without any mistakes at all. I am a bit worried because I gave her the order I was to play in (BAC) and then in complete nerves started on A by mistake - but kept going anyway. I wouldn't say that I played with any great passion or interpretation (except for a few phrases when my nerves seemed to settle momentarily) but I think it was steady.
My aurals seemed ok, not great, but passable, I hope. I got the cadence right, time sig right and stammered a few words about the period of the piece which was classical (I think) and a march-type tune. My sight reading wasn't too bad - my timing was a bit off in one place (a 4:4 piece, but with quite a few rests), but I definitely got the dymanics right and I got most of the notes right. It was quite a long piece in A minor with a lot of flats and sharps in it.
At 41 I feel I was lucky not to have a heart attack with the amount of stress I was feeling but at least it is over and hopefully I will sleep better tonight than last night!! and the waiting begins ...................
