I used to play violin and I had Dominant Strings on my violin. My sister had Spirocord strings on hers (they're usually put on violas and they make a very, very powerful sound.) I like dominant, a strong sound!

Was the sound nice? And how were the strings on her fingers?

Mimi,

As for the prices you enquired about:

Dominant strings for violin are about £23 a set. Not sure about the Obligato, probably about the same, but maybe a bit more.

I have found the Obligato strings can tire after just a few months though. I guess it depends on how much playing you do, but I ususally recommend that pupils who do lots of practice should change the strings on their violin at least once a year anyway, as any string will begin to sound dull eventually.

You should be able to buy Dominant from any good music shop.

Good luck! smile.gif

thanks alot guys. It really helped.

I usually get Dominants, but on my new violin they fitted Larsens, and they sound lovely. Apparently they are good quality but expensive.

Where do you get your strings for that price? I've always bought them at just below £30 or thereabouts. sad.gif

They have them on special offer at the moment to include an extra saving of 10%. Complete set, and price includes postage and packing. I think they're about £22.95 smile.gif

Another website worth trying is

http://www.violinvaluations.com

They are selling a set of Dominant strings for a little under £24 including P&P.

When I was at music college I always used Dominant, but after graduation I changed to Pirastro Oliv gut strings for about five years before switching to Pirastro Evah Pirazzi synthetic strings about a year ago, and haven't regretted it, (around £44 a set). Their response is fantastic and I no longer have the frustration of the strings going out of tune with humidity and temperature changes.

At the end of the day, it has to be remembered that the string that suits one person might not suit everyone else; it depends very much on the instrument and also as a player, what sort of sound you prefer.

For anyone with a general interest in Pirastro strings, they have an excellent website with downloadable pdf files giving descriptions of the tonal characteristics of all their strings.

hi isabelsmells
sorry it's ages since i've replied to your question on the forum! My sister says the strings are quite hard, they're completely metal strings and they make a good sound. It's a very rich sound but it's quite harsh as well. I dunno if those are the right words to describe it!
good luck with your violin playing!

You should try this website for all strings.

http://www.concordmusic.com/

They are based in New Jersey, and are really competitively priced. well worth a visit.

I have been using D'Addario Zyex for the last few years and I love them. I used Dominant for years and still get my students to use them as they're cheaper but I will never go back from Zyex. I get them online from www.swstrings.com

Hi, I've got the Obligato strings (nylon core ones). They're great - similar sound to gut strings but they don't snap (or don't snap as easily!). My boyfriend bought them for me rolleyes.gif but I think they are about £45

Dominant used to be my favourate but I felt that it takes quite sometime to settle down. For me, it takes about 1 week or more....

I find it very responsive except for the E
Anyway, I will fall back to dominant strings at any time...

Try larsen gold E if you can.
Larsen set is also very good. Nice and complex tone but I felt harder to play as compared to dominant strings.

Currently, I am using Vision Titanium string. biggrin.gif
