Full Version: Pieces Without Pedal

I'm currently helping an adult learner with severe ankle problems that mean she's unable to pedal. She loves music, and is about grade 6 standard, with a good grasp of theory etc - does anyone have any ideas for pieces I could give her? Any romantic pieces in particular would be great - I find myself falling back on Beethoven/Bach a lot.

Bach, obviously - but Beethoven without a pedal? I think it would be difficult to make that sound good, and to be honest I reckon that pedalling had become so inherent a part of playing the piano by the Romantic era that you would find it very difficult to find anything that would sound half decent without the pedal.

Bach or pre-Bach seems to be the way to go. You could try Scarlatti, and there are also some Purcell keyboard suites which might do the job. For more modern works you could get away with some ragtime, and I think some of the pieces in Bartok's Mikrokosmos could be done without pedal (eg From The Diary Of A Fly, though that's about Grade 8).

Does she have ankle problems with one or both feet? If it is only the right and the problem is likely to be long term how feasible would it be to learn to sit slightly to the right of middle C and learn to pedal with the left foot?

If it is only a short-to-medium term problem how about focusing on duets for a time which you could play together and so overcome any need for her to do the pedaling?

How about a nice Mozart Sonata?

Try some more unusual composers from these periods - look at some of the anthologies and see what you can find

what about kuhlau Sonatinas, Gurlitt? and Dussek maybe?

There are others but my head is a little fried at the mo - I have been correcting a lot today

Actually, all baroque pieces can be played without pedal. Bach's Fugues would be the right thing for you, I guess. They also improve technique very well.
But there are modern ones as well, which can be played pedalless. I would advice the Bumble Bee by Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov.
