Well, the classic fm Hall of Fame top 300 ends with The Lark Ascending being no.1 again! With all the attention on Elgar, I thought it would be his Cello Concerto, especially as Mozart was no.1 last year in his anniversary year.
Ah well, The 'Emperor' may get to No1 in 2027, the 200th Anniversary of Beethovens death.
How many days to Easter 2027??
1..2..3..4..5..6....

Tis a very nice piece! I am a little biased in favour of last years winner though

I was hoping Elgar would win...

But the Lark Ascending is a lovely piece

I hate that lark.
It makes me want to shoot it every time, I'm not a violent person but I simply can't bear it.

Oh no!!! No no no!!! Why do you hate The Lark Ascending? It's so beautiful! It's one of my favourite pieces so I'm actually quite upset by that! *sniffle*

What??????
Some people actually listen to Classic FM ?
If they would just cut-out the painfully repetitive adverts, I might just tune-in again some day.
Ho hum. back to the grind........

I hate the lark ascending because it feels so much of a cliche (sorry I can't find my accent for the e)
Actually I pretty much can't bear nearly all of Vaughan Williams for the same reason. I turn it off when it comes on the radio, nothing else ever grates in quite the same way.
No offence!

I love RVW - very haunting and quintissential English........I love his use of folksong idiom and his wonderful harmonies and orchestration......
oh, BTW - saw a skylark this morning when I was at the top of our crags taking the real cd for an extra long walk......it was a sentimental walk today - the 2nd anniversary of losing yellow dog, and the first anniversary of scattering the ashes of black dog and yellow dog at the top of the crags........hearing the skylark singing made it somehow even more special.......

Someone I know objects to this Hall of Fame List, with a reason that I find interesting and am inclined to agree with. They say that one cannot rank works of important composers when they come from different periods, and that it gives the impression to youngsters that it's all just a competition, rather like pop songs.
Opinions?

Yes, I would be inclined to agree with that, thinking about it. An extreme example - a piece of renaiseance (I know I can't spell to save my life!) choral music, and a contemporay film score for full orchestra. Wheres the common ground to compare them? Both come from completly different times and traditions, and were for purposes that someone in the other time probably couldn't/wouldn't imagine.
But then, it does show the huge range of 'classical' music!

I wouldn't entirely agree with that. This chart is made up of listeners votes rather than sales of recordings. Surely then, people vote for (in this case) their three favourite pieces of music, whatever period thay come from. I voted for three pieces which had one from the Classical period and two from the Romantic. If I had a mind to, I could've chosen one from the Renaissance or Baroque. I like music from all periods.
I guess there is an element of competiton in it but to compare it to the drivel that is pop music today (sorry, showing my age here!!) and the hype that goes with it, I see no comparison at all.

Hey, I think most pop music is drivel, and I'm 15! I still don't see how one can compare music from such different traditions though.

This particular chart isn't about comparison. I voted for the Emperor Piano Concerto as my No1. Not because I like it better in comparison to the Bach Prelude and Fugues, for example. It's purely and simply my all time favourite piano music. Which brings me back to the point of this chart..people voting for their favourite music...

The only redeeming feature about Classic FM's hall of fame is that for a couple of days we don't have to listen to the same few pieces over and over again.
As much as I like V's 4 Seasons, D's New World Symph, H's Planets etc - they are played on an almost daily basis. It gets a bit tiresome. I sometimes wonder if they own more than 10 CD's!
Anybody remember Simon Bates from the Radio 1 days? He knows as much about music as I do about brain surgery.
'Our tune' - pass me the sick bag.
