need to get myself some practice papers too then, I will hopefully be doing grade six in the next sitting then jumping to grade 8 on the one after that dont really want it overlapping with university too much. Is this possible doing the grades so close together?

It depends if you're in the UK (or another country that has three exam periods in a year) then probably it would be too hard to do it in adjacent sittings; if you're in a country that only has one exam period per year then it's more likely to be possible!
Don't worry if you can't do it you'll have plenty of spare time when you're at university, trust me I've just been!

For grade 6 theory the best books to use and work from are the Theory work books which the Ab provide and also the AB guide to music theory parts I and II. I also used the ABC of harmony and the butterworth harmony book. All of which are excellent.
When buying the actual grade 6 work book though, be carful not to buy the wrong one. Grades 6,7, and 8 have all been re-printed ina new format which different covers on them (all white with a large number 6,7 or 8 on them) these are the ones you want.
Good luck!

I already have the grade six work book the big white one. I am hoping to do the grades in the next three sittings. I will need to see how hard t is going to be first. I am studying music at uni anyway so It will help me as I do the grades. Just out of interest how long do people usually work for their later grades?

I bought the wrong/old one!
If the old ones are now superseded how come ABRSM still sells the old ones?!

I believe that the white book with the big 6 on it is the new version of the music theory in practice book for the revised syllabus (revised about five years ago I think).

The new one would be much better.
I think there is some different content in the syllabus (but not a great deal).
The format of the last 2 questions changed and also the length of composition (shorter).
A teacher who is up to date with the syllabus would be able to fill in any gaps.
When i did the later grades I was taught an awful lot more than is actually in the workbook or in the 2 AB theory books.(which was very helpful).
