I prefer listening to songs in 3/4 to 4/4. Other time sigs are a bit to obscure for me to form an opinion on 7/8 is pretty nice though. As I say this is a pretty silly thread, anyone else have any preferences?

ps I quite like 5/8, but don't think I've done enough pieces in it to claim it's a favourite. It's quite fun though - to me it sounds like 6/8 in a huge rush!

I've come across some bizarre fiddle peices in 7/8. I think it was Russian...or Romanian. It began with an R anyway.
I like 6/8 too.

7/8 ROCKS.
Radiohead's Paranoid Android has some 7/8 sections in it - worth a listen if you get hold of a recording. OK, it's very odd, but makes good use of it.

I've never heard those sections as 7/8. I mean I've never got the impression a quaver beat have suddenly dropped out, it just seems funky.

Yep, they definitely do drop a quaver...it modulates as it leads into the 7 first time round as well - it's only about 4 bars' worth.

7/8 but also 3/4 and 6/8 when used together like in America from West Side Story......plus 4/4 when it's divided into 3+3+2 quaver combinations......

Have to be boring and say 6/8 the one I find the easiest to sighread

. Which given I'm not good at sightreading, is a bonus

The piece I'm concentrating on at the moment (Prokofiev 3rd sonata) is in 4/4 (12/8). I really enjoy the feeling of turbulence the frequent cross - rhythms create.

My favourite time signature is 5/8. Oh, 5/8 and I had some happy times together, let me tell you. That was back in the old days, of course, before the unpleasantness, and I've come to realise that I have to move on, but there will always be a place in my heart for 5/8. I think 5/8 knows this, but we both know it's too late now.
12/16, on the other hand, is nothing more than a little strumpet. If I never see 12/16 for the rest of my life it will still be too soon.

Well, I like 4/4 for how easy it is to count when playing!!
However, I also like 3/8, 6/8 and 8/8. I've had some quite nice pieces in 5/4 as well.
I put a composition into 6/4 for a section once - I will NOT be doing that again!!

I like 5/8 and 6/8 too - but I also like what a previous poster said, when 4/4 is divided into 3+3+2 - isn't that classed as 8/8 though? Or did I make that up?

Anything with 5/8 or 7/8 does it for me - love listening and playing. Makes me want to get up and move much more powerfully than 'ordinary' dance rhythms - bizarre!

Lots of people like 5s and 6s I've noticed - wonder why
Oddball
Apr 20 2007, 11:07 PM
I suppose because they're out of the ordinary. SO much stuff in pop culture is written in 4, in fact nearly all of it. Tune to Radio 1 (after purchasing earmuffs

), and count how many tunes are in 4. I bet it's 100%.
So I guess the 5s, 6s and 7s are just a bit jolly, when they rarely come along.

Funny, I find 6/8 easier to sight read too, don't know why exactly. It's also one of my favourites, along with 5/4 or 5/8. 9/8 is also gorgeous, I know a lovely slip jig called The Butterfly in it

I have an old scribbled photocopy of it which a fella who gave me a couple of trad lessons gave to me, but I think that's probably in my parents' house somewhere. I actually heard Martin Hayes the fiddler on the radio playing it recently (it's probably on one of his CDs if you can find them), but he plays it about three times as fast as anyone else I've ever heard

Actually I think it sounds nicer a bit slower, it has a lovely almost-melancholic lilt to it

At orchestra we played the English Folk Song Suite (Seventeen Come Sunday) and it had a 6/8 time signature against a 2/4 time signature! It was pretty awesome. I like 2/4, 6/8 and 9/8.

4/4 - nice 'n simple, but people at gigs love it...
Music in three is silly coz people can't dance to it!
But purely for music (not in a gig situation) then obscure time sigs are fun!!

Another 6/8 fan here. One of my favourite tunes at the moment is a jazz tune called Love Addict, by a Japanese singer called Mika Nakashima. It's in 6/8 and swings like a crazed monkey.

A drums teacher I once had said that 3/4 will be the time signature of the future, because people will get bored with 4/4.
