Jaunty Angle
I prefer listening to songs in 3/4 to 4/4. Other time sigs are a bit to obscure for me to form an opinion on 7/8 is pretty nice though. As I say this is a pretty silly thread, anyone else have any preferences?
sarah-flute
6/8 - nice lilt!
flute fanatic
3/4 and 6/8 are good (dance time sigs.).
appleblossom
I like 3/4 and alla breve.
july
Definitely 6/8! Easy to count, too! smile.gif
flute fanatic
One I really hate is 2/2, why can't we just stick to 4/4.
Nocturne
I Like 6/8 best too laugh.gif
sarah-flute
ps I quite like 5/8, but don't think I've done enough pieces in it to claim it's a favourite. It's quite fun though - to me it sounds like 6/8 in a huge rush!
andante_in_c
To play: 6/8. To listen to: quite like 7/8 as well. smile.gif
sarah-flute
I'm not sure I even KNOW a piece in 7/8, heathen wot I yam.
Malone
I've come across some bizarre fiddle peices in 7/8. I think it was Russian...or Romanian. It began with an R anyway.

I like 6/8 too. smile.gif

7/8 ROCKS.

Radiohead's Paranoid Android has some 7/8 sections in it - worth a listen if you get hold of a recording. OK, it's very odd, but makes good use of it.
Jaunty Angle
I've never heard those sections as 7/8. I mean I've never got the impression a quaver beat have suddenly dropped out, it just seems funky.

Yep, they definitely do drop a quaver...it modulates as it leads into the 7 first time round as well - it's only about 4 bars' worth.
DrumKat
I like 10/8 and 11/8. Basically, the obscure ones!
chocolatedog
7/8 but also 3/4 and 6/8 when used together like in America from West Side Story......plus 4/4 when it's divided into 3+3+2 quaver combinations...... smile.gif
AnotherPianist
Have to be boring and say 6/8 the one I find the easiest to sighread biggrin.gif. Which given I'm not good at sightreading, is a bonus smile.gif.
bevpiano
The piece I'm concentrating on at the moment (Prokofiev 3rd sonata) is in 4/4 (12/8). I really enjoy the feeling of turbulence the frequent cross - rhythms create.
sonataform
My favourite time signature is 5/8. Oh, 5/8 and I had some happy times together, let me tell you. That was back in the old days, of course, before the unpleasantness, and I've come to realise that I have to move on, but there will always be a place in my heart for 5/8. I think 5/8 knows this, but we both know it's too late now.

12/16, on the other hand, is nothing more than a little strumpet. If I never see 12/16 for the rest of my life it will still be too soon.
Frederic Chopin
Definitely 3/4 or 6/8! wub.gif
Saradhi
3/4 and 6/8 for me..
petrat
Any compound time sigs for me!

Money - Pink Floyd (Dark side of the moon)
lizbun
My fave time sig is 6/8 or 3/4 or 3/8, because I like counting in 3s.
Morgan's Munchkin
Well, I like 4/4 for how easy it is to count when playing!!

However, I also like 3/8, 6/8 and 8/8. I've had some quite nice pieces in 5/4 as well.

I put a composition into 6/4 for a section once - I will NOT be doing that again!!
fsharpminor
5/4. as in Shostakovitch Prelude Op34 no 22 in B flat
JulieCSM
I like 5/8 and 6/8 too - but I also like what a previous poster said, when 4/4 is divided into 3+3+2 - isn't that classed as 8/8 though? Or did I make that up?
SueHM
Anything with 5/8 or 7/8 does it for me - love listening and playing. Makes me want to get up and move much more powerfully than 'ordinary' dance rhythms - bizarre! cool.gif
cellocase
5/4! That or a nice swinging 6/8, please...
The Old Lady
6/8 or 5/4 are my favourites rolleyes.gif
Beverley.
sarah-flute
Lots of people like 5s and 6s I've noticed - wonder why unsure.gif
Oddball
I suppose because they're out of the ordinary. SO much stuff in pop culture is written in 4, in fact nearly all of it. Tune to Radio 1 (after purchasing earmuffs tongue.gif), and count how many tunes are in 4. I bet it's 100%.

So I guess the 5s, 6s and 7s are just a bit jolly, when they rarely come along.
sarah-flute
laugh.gif yeah
Reverie
6/8 too. Woah, I'm unoriginal...

It's just easier to sight read, and has nice rhythms. smile.gif

Funny, I find 6/8 easier to sight read too, don't know why exactly. It's also one of my favourites, along with 5/4 or 5/8. 9/8 is also gorgeous, I know a lovely slip jig called The Butterfly in it wub.gif
Devil_Fiddler
I like 6/8 or 9/8. Well actually I used to just not "get" 9/8 but I played some awesome slip jigs with a fiddle band over Easter which converted me. Fibi - may have to go find The Butterfly now...
musical_K
Wow - I thought I was weird to like 6/8 but it seems pretty popular so I guess I'm not alone! yay.
Yeah 6/8 is my favourite to play cos it's easy to count smile.gif

I have an old scribbled photocopy of it which a fella who gave me a couple of trad lessons gave to me, but I think that's probably in my parents' house somewhere. I actually heard Martin Hayes the fiddler on the radio playing it recently (it's probably on one of his CDs if you can find them), but he plays it about three times as fast as anyone else I've ever heard blink.gif Actually I think it sounds nicer a bit slower, it has a lovely almost-melancholic lilt to it
kenm
I'm always happy when I see 17/16, because it means I'm playing Janacek's "Mladi".
pianoboe
4/4 - simple and attractive
6/8 - So pretty... wub.gif
jennthesaxplayer
My favorite's are 7/8, and 4/4!! and 5/3
JulieCSM
5/3? What the heck is 5/3?
sarah-flute
No idea........ laugh.gif

Compund time is good! Rock on 12/8!! And 3/2
Hautbois 91
At orchestra we played the English Folk Song Suite (Seventeen Come Sunday) and it had a 6/8 time signature against a 2/4 time signature! It was pretty awesome. I like 2/4, 6/8 and 9/8.
Manek
4/4 - nice 'n simple, but people at gigs love it...

Music in three is silly coz people can't dance to it!

But purely for music (not in a gig situation) then obscure time sigs are fun!!

I've played 5/4, 7/4, 11/8, 13/16, 18/20 etc...
ChevvyChev
6/8, 9/8, 12/8 are good, i just like to play in them hehe biggrin.gif

Anything in simple time!! As long as it isn't in compound time i'm happy!! laugh.gif

Another 6/8 fan here. One of my favourite tunes at the moment is a jazz tune called Love Addict, by a Japanese singer called Mika Nakashima. It's in 6/8 and swings like a crazed monkey. smile.gif

A drums teacher I once had said that 3/4 will be the time signature of the future, because people will get bored with 4/4. smile.gif
