Can anyone recommend any good jazzy/popular books for a clarinet player of about grades 5-6 standard (more grade 6 than grade 5). I'm looking for something for a pupil that is fun to play and has nothing whatsoever to do with exams or books on the exam list.
Has anyone got "Guest Spot: 20 Jazz Greats Playalong for Clarinet"? and if so what standard would you say it is and would you recommend it?
Thank you!

Singing and Swinging would be good at this level although it is on the grade 6 list. Is that bad? I haven't really looked at Jazzin About (Wedgwood) but that could be worth a look. Guest Spot have some jazz and pop books, I've got "Jazz Solos", it's OK. Don't know the one you mention.
Alternatively why not try the Jazz syllabus, if improvising is in their interests. There are the Aebersold books as well if you go down this route.
Or if they want to try playing by ear why not take a track they like and play along aurally.

Thank you - hadn't thought of Singing and Swinging - I will go and have a look at it. I'll also check out some of the other books you suggested. My pupil wants something completely un-exam related and fun this term as he is taking his A-levels so I was thinking of suggesting something jazzy or something with backing tracks.
Thanks again.

I have this book but it is for my alto sax. It's great.
I also have the jazz solos for clarinet, this does improvisation which is good as well. Good for doing improvisation and improving it, which i use it for. Also, the songs are good.
