hi malone nice chickens are they pets or larder stock i have a hamster that likes my flute she sits and sways along quite cute really

they are for laying eggs and breeding really. The Cockerel and the hen in the fore ground are from good stock so hopefully they will breed. The one in the background wasn't so good but should lay eggs.

If I remember rightly, silkies make great mothers - they go broody quite often and could be used to hatch other eggs... They look great! biggrin.gif

Yeah! I read that in my book that they go broody quite alot. I think their eggs only take 20 days to hatch - i think.

You got your chickens biggrin.gif
Malone
Ah yes! I didnt get the chickens that I was waiting for the other day, the lady forgot to bring them. I got these ones this morning from a breeder.
petrat
They look good! WHy didn't you go for Scots Greys though being in Scotland?
Malone
Hmmm! There is a rare breed poultry auction at the local mart which I'm going to go along to and see if I can pick up a couple of interesting birds. Maybe even a Peacock! smile.gif

Wow, they're great happy.gif Hmm... spent a large majority of my lunch time today talking to our school chickens with my friend rolleyes.gif She has a rather massive obsession with them and I kinda got dragged along. They're OK really though. But not as cute as your's Malone happy.gif

They are very cute and soooo fluffy. Think I might go up the road and pester the lady for they other pair. But I dont want the silkies to get bullied by the big chickens... What a dilema. And do you think that two cockerels will be ok? I wonder if they will crow in Harmony. I dont want any augmented unison crowing in the morning. A nice major 3rd would be quite nice. Or a 4th would sound quite oriental...

No, they will fight.

Also, if you keep a cockerel with your hens you will get trace in your eggs.
petrat
I have several cockerels but they are very free range indeed, having the run of all of our fields so they don't fight but in a pen they would duff eachother up daily! Our eggs are fine though. Just keep one and let him enjoy several wives!
Malone
Yes, I thought so. I didnt want them cross breeding either with the leghorns. May end up with some very bizarre looking chickens. These chickens are quite free range. We live on a farm so we have fenced of a small paddock for them. They cant go out at the moment because they will just eat the crops which have just been sprayed with nast fertiliser.

I want to keep chickens, but hubby won't let me. Oh and those who've read about what I do to road kill should rest assured, I want live chickens, if I want to eat I'll go to the butchers.
