Hi,

I have not long passed my grade 5 violin exam happy.gif and now I'm looking for some nice, maybe a bit "showyoff" music about grade 6 standard something to challenge me. Can anybody recommend some pieces?

Thanks

xx

I did a piece for grade 6 (many years ago - can't play it any more) that had loads of double and triple stopping which sounded quite cool when I got it right (ie very rarely)

Just looked it up - Wienawski Chanson Polonaise, Op12 no. 2

Was on the 95/96 syllabus lol

The RVW Greensleeves Fantasia's about G6 I think.

How about the Faure Berceuse? Is that also? I had it in a book somewhere unsure.gif

Some of the Shostakovich Albumstucke might be the right kind of level.

& maybe the first and/or last movements of the Dvorak Sonatina? Don't know that they're really G6, but they're fun and quite show offy for their level biggrin.gif

My violin rep. knowledge is a bit out of date but hope that helps a bit!

Around Grade 5, son Viohazard played Mollenhauer/The Boy Paganini, which is quite showy, and the 6th of Dancla/Airs Varies, which I remember thinking was rather Disneyland (not so Disney-ish musically, but lots of sparkly lights and rockets!). Both of those are quite short pieces, and have enough variation in them to be fun.

Oooooo sounds intruiging (spelling?) biggrin.gif

Assuming you've looked at the ABRSM grade 6 lists, why not have a look at the Trinity Guildhall lists - they're available as a PDF via http://www.trinitycollege.co.uk/site/?id=1054

I agree with the Fantasia on Greensleeves - daughter has just passed Trinity Guildhall grade 6 playing that on viola so I imagine it's the same level for violin (it's on the ABRSM G6 cello list). It's beautiful!

You could try to get hold of some ABRSM grade 6 books from previous years.

Many years ago I accompanied my daughter in Grade 6 and it was a piece by Walton, with a lot of harmonics. I think it was one of apair of two pieces, the second one being extremely difficult.
I heard them played again by Tasmin Lttle a couple of months back at a recital in Leeds.

If you want to go up a grade, I've had a few pupils recently really both enjoying Meditation (Thais) and the Schindler's List theme.

Melodie (from Orfeo ed Euridice) by Gluck.
It used to be a grade 6 violin exam piece for Australian AMEB exam.
Beautiful piece dry.gif

Thanks for all the replies, I can play Schindlers Liszt bit not brilliantly well. Still can practise biggrin.gif
