I am sitting in the office downstairs and in the smaller office upstairs , directly above me, I can hear a secretary or somebody working! (We have two offices in our home by the way.) The door to that room is locked, and apart from me the whole house is empty. Three times I have popped upstairs to check and there is nobody in the room, no cats, nothing. I have not been drinking or taking any other illegal substances, and I am wide awake, having been up and about since 7.30 am. There is the sound of someone walking around, and muttering. I am going to go out for a while and do some teaching and hope that by the time I am back they have gone!

Have you left a TV or radio on??
I take it you are not semi-detached or terraced.
Tinnitus?
A ghost
If it is the latter, we had something very similar in my childhood home, and it never hurt us, in fact we just got used to it.
Water Pipes?
Is it still there when you got back Petra??
Beverley.

Just back, and nothing yet but I have only just walked into the office. No radio or tv on, water is not likely as the heating is switched off and the boiler comes on between 6,30 wnd 8.00 am. We are not semi-detched and our nearest neighbors are two fields away, and I don't get tinnitus. It was in that room only, nowhere else in the rest of a very large house. All seems quiet so far.

Seems to have gone away now. I could get Dafydd to wear a big white sheet when you come next if you like.

How old is your house? Have you been there long?

The house dates back to the early 1800's and Dafydd has been here since 1957 and I have for 21 years.

I had a sound a bit like that in the attic above my music room.
I called the Environmental Health people out 'cos I thought it was an uninvited rat.
Turned out that there were pigeons nesting in the guttering, and they had got into the soffit, from where the noise they were making went across the whole roof void.
There may be some equally simple explanation for you, Petrat

That's a thought but the footsteps were loud and seemed only a few feet above my head. I could not hear anything else in any of the other rooms upstairs or down and the attic space covers several. Gone away now I think.

Perhaps Lavvy made herself at home whilst Addy was on safari, and then scarpered when she heard you come back

Are there any pipes under the floorboards which could have been "knocking" as they cooled down/ or if the heating pump had kicked in? Our pipes sometimes knock if the water pressure is up too high.....

Failing that it could be mice with big boots on........

Could always send hubby around to Bless your House/exorcise any ghosts...bit of a long trip Wales, but as long as he has a chnace to go walking he'll be happy. Only an Anglican Priest I'm afraid, but you could always see if any of the Jesuits at St Beuno's were up to the job, Jesuits don't take no for an answer.

Hi Petra, just thought of all the logical explanations.
Anything else happened??
If you have lived there that long it's strange you haven't herad it before
Did you feel spooked?

Don't worry Petra it might be a one off and never trouble you again! It's a bit scarey though when you're not sure, or if you see aspirit when you're not expecting too.

I really cannot think of anything logical that might have caused it. I would have been very spooked if it had happened at night but in the light morning, no, I wasn't at all spooked, just very puzzled. I am very often in the office at that time and have never heard any clog dancing rats or mice muttering to themselves before. The central heating system is switched off at the central control box because of the heat wave and there are no other pipes running anywhere near that room. If it happens again I'll go and sit there for a while and see if I can locate the sounds. Failing that would anyone care to shout "Go Away Ghost" for me?
