I live at Wareham in Dorset and am looking for a teacher who can assist my 11 year old son the the Aural part of his Grade 5 Flute exam which he will be sitting this summer.

Would be prepared to travel up to 20 mioles if necessary.

Have you contacted your Music Service as there is every chance they run Aural classes (ours does). It wouldn't be 1 to 1 but with Aural CD's you might find he will do ok, especially if he's done Aural before for lower grades.

My daughter did her grade 5 Yesterday, she's just 12, good luck to your son when the time comes.

What does his flute teacher suggest? Surely this is their responsibility - not yours? If they can't/won't do the training (and IMHO they should be prepared to), then I feel it's up to them to make the arrangements or at least discuss possible people to approach. I'd go back and ask if I were you.

Thanks for your reply. My son has teacher from Dorset Music Service but she has not mentioned anything about Aural classes but unfortunately she is not a very motivated teacher. However I will take your advice and contact their office directly.

You are correct it should be up to his flute teacher but she is from the local Music Serice and she is not very motivated at all. She leaves all the arrangements up to us (as parents) e. g. finding a pianist for accompaniment and learning the aural syaballus.

Thank you! A lot of Peri's don't teach Aural as there simply isn't time in the lesson, our Aural lessons are held at the Arts Centre, a different time for each level.

I've looked at Hofnote and I'm definately thinking of subscribing, that might be worth doing for you too.

What pieces is your son playing?

Piano teachers are a good bet for Aural tuition if you have to find extra lessons. Many teachers of other instruments shy away from aural because they don't have the piano skills, but the tests are the same for all instruments.

Your child's flute teacher really should be including aural development regularly as part of the lessons, whether he is entered for an exam or not. If she really can't do this, it should be her responsibility to make some other arrangements for aural tuition.

It's often the way that Peri's don't cover Aural in the lessons, even though they will have the capability to do it and will with their private pupils (it's to do with being short of time I think). My girls have instrumental lessons at School and at the Arts Centre and don't get Aural until about 6 weeks before the exam. Then the Music Service offer it in a block of half hour lessons, seperate classes for AB and Trinity. This is not the ideal especially at the higher Grades although this time there was only the two of them attending the classes for Grade 5.

You could also check out the Incorporated Society of Musicians and EPTA (European PIano TEachers) websites - they have find a teacher sections... try to find one who has studied music education.
