Do you remember the Clangers? They were small knitted creatures that spoke with swannee whistle voices. I used to love them.

Little toy is probably a collector's item now. Are they still on tv?

I remember them, but they weren't a particular favourite. mellow.gif

I have a Tiny Clanger too. When they were first on TV a friend and I used to borrow the swanee whistles from the school music room and have clanger conversations. smile.gif
petrat
biggrin.gif We used to do that in college orchestra with our cellos!

I remember them! A childhood favourite!!!!

<dons anorak>

The Clangers programmes were properly scripted, and the film makers followed the approximate sounds of the intended speech with the swanee whistles. In one programme, a Clanger had to say "oh ****, the ****** door's stuck again", and the BBC rejected this because they didn't allow swearing in children's programmes. It had to be changed before the recording could take place.

Then a talking Clanger toy was produced, and by way of revenge the film makers used the "oh ****, the ****** door's stuck again" line for that instead biggrin.gif

I remember the Clangers with great affection. When my kids started watching them (showing my age now) I was shocked to discover that they are pink blush.gif - I could only remember them in delicate shades of grey!!

Anyone else here old enough to remember Noggin the Nog and The Pogles??? And as you all know, my sis is a great fan of Bagpuss (she loves Ivor the Engine too wub.gif ).

smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

I just about remember Noggin, or at least remember hearing about him... The Pogles, not sure...

Bagpuss and Ivor were childhood staples for me though........

Oh, yes! psh-t-k indeed!

I was really scared by Nogbad the Bad - and when I spotted my first cormorant on the Thames a couple of years ago, I thought, 'Goodness, it's Grackle!'

Pogle's Wood I think was '60s. I don't remember ever watching it....

You do realise I'm now going to go to bed with an image in my mind of Ivor the Engine making that 'psh-t-k' noise now Sarah?... laugh.gif laugh.gif

Playing a flute, I hope! tongue.gif

Hmmm, yes, me too...

Pogles were indeed 60s which means that you are far too young to remember it, Barry! The Pogles used to feed Plant bilberry wine...Noggin was also 60s...

Clangers biggrin.gif We used to have a Clanger advent calendar which made noises
Cyrilla
Ah, well, you are obviously remembering a previous incarnation when you were a Mother Superior...

wink.gif tongue.gif laugh.gif

We have Clangers, Ivor the Engine and Bagpuss on Video tape. I felt it important not to deny the children such an important part of my childhood.

I still think they're wonderful even now...Oh and the Bagpuss version of "I saw a ship a sailing" is still regularly sung to the children as a bedtime song. I don't care if the tune is not the traditional one, its such a beautiful tune that that's the one I sing.

edit: the pogles must be very late 60's / early 70's otherwise I wouldn't remember them (tries desperately not to reveal her real age laugh.gif )

smile.gif Noggin the Nog and Nogbad the Bad. It was one of my favourites. Does anyone remember Silas the Seahorse? He had a friend calle Bartholomew Shrimp. None of my friends do.

The subject of Clangers comes up with every beginner flute pupil I take on - as soon as they can blow the headjoint (unattached from the rest of the flute) I get them to put a finger in the open end and move it in and out to make 'Clanger' noises - makes it a bit more interesting to practice at home!

who could not love bagpuss tongue.gif its the ring tone on my phone wub.gif i thought this thread might be about percussion ( clangers) but little pink mice like creatures on a monday morning are most welcome unsure.gif

It was the songs I really remembered, and now get passed on.

Yes I too remember Noggin the Nog, but not the Pogles. I know I'm not touchy about my age, but I remember the early 70's ones the first time they were broadcast.

More from our trivia correspondent. Joanna Lumley was the voice of Kiki the frog, and the scriptwriter on Trumpton is now running a newspaper on the island of Arran (not far, in a straight line, from the village of Ardentinny, where Eric Thompson wrote the original English-language scripts for the Magic Roundabout).

Yes I remember the herbs, hector's house, trumpton, camberwick green, chigley etc. What really dates me is remembering Andy Pandy, but they were repeats that were shown in the 1970s.

Fingerbobs! Yes, remember that! biggrin.gif

I liked those credits too - don't recall which one it was.

I also liked the credits where the characters rose out of a musical box biggrin.gif

Mum is a big fan of Rhubarb and Custard biggrin.gif

Several years ago I held a 'nostalgia' party - everyone came dressed up in school uniform and we sat and watched videos of Watch With Mother, The Herbs, Bagpuss, Camberwick Green and Trumpton whilst eating egg sandwiches and jelly and ice-cream (all very nice until someone spilt a bottle of cherryade all over the sarnies ohmy.gif ill.gif ). Brilliant.

I often spend long car journeys working out the solfa to the music from these wonderful programmes (I know, I'm a Sad Woman rolleyes.gif ).

I think Sandra Kerr was Madeleine the rag doll in Bagpuss and I think did a lot of the music. She is a Big Cheese in Folkworks in the North of England and is a great folk expert smile.gif .

The music for these programmes was SO wonderful!

When I started teaching one of the 'Bootleg Beatles' last year I was delighted to find out he is of the same vintage as myself (one month older) - so our Kodály lessons tend to be interspersed with serious discussions about Spotty Dog laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif .

And why do you think my little sis goes under the name of 'Bagpuss' on the forums?!

Well the tunes used and singing had an influence on a 30 something soprano to the effect that her children also like all the songs and want mummy to sing them to them. Good job singing is so important around our house.
