Hi- just wondered how people were getting on with the Grade 2 piano listC piece: Garage Sale? I've had a few pupils who have played this in their exam recently and I think they play it really well - lots of articulation, good dynamics and timing etc. - yet their marks were all low. Just wondered if others had got good marks in this piece and can offer advice on what they are looking for. I've got a good exm record and my pupils generally get very good marks - I would like to see how I can help them further.

What sort of comments are they getting on the mark sheet?

Comments are generally positive: capturing spirit of piece, good dynamics etc. a couple of rhythm slips on a coule of occasions - but I don't feel that they reflect the marks 21/22. I understand it could be nerves on the day, but capturing the character and feel usually helps with the marks of a piece. Nothing on any of the comments helps me, as a teacher, to help other pupils witht he same piece.

No, that doesn't sound very helpful does it?
Capturing the character of a piece suggests higher marks than that, particularly at this level.

No, I agree, that sounds better than 21 or 22.

I've got someone learning it, but no-one who's taken the exam this year yet.

I don't have the answer to this but I am looking forward to all suggestions as I was planning on playing this piece for my G2 exam ohmy.gif
My teacher tells me that because it's a 'jazzy piece' the type of rythm is slightly different from classical pieces and that might be why I (at the moment, I am still learning it) have a few minor slips here and there with it. Don't know if this makes any sense as I'm all new to this!

Did they all take the exam at the same time with the same examiner? If so, and if you feel that the comments really don't seem to tie up with the low marks it would be worth getting in touch with the board.

Only one of my pupils has played it for an exam so far. He got 27. The examiner enjoyed the rock idiom he brought out. He and I both like that kind of music, so it suited us both.
