Hi everyone,
For anyone interested, tying a yellow ribbon around things is a way to show your support to the troops.
I for one will be doing so.

I use white ribbons as a peace sign sometimes. I wear a white poppy too on poppy day.

I thought you were supposed to tie a yellow ribbon on something to welcome somebody home from prison!

They are not fighting for me. I appreciate you are worried about your family being involved, but not everyone shares the same view about why they are out there taking that flak... Bring them home, safely, is what I say.

Sorry to mention it, I justt thought that some people would be interested to know there is a way to show you want the troops home safely.

It is a lovely thought Soph. I may well tie a white and a yellow ribon somewhere tomorrow.

I only have white and black... I'll leave the black one at home I think (I only wear it in Winter when i'm really pale anyway, and it looks a bit morbid)
So does white work?

They work as well as any yellow ones I think. White poppies work! They always get a reaction on rememberance day, even if it is only "Your poppy looks a bit pale" but when I explain why I am wearing it the reaction is usualy positive. I don't often get abuse hurled at me for wearing it although it does happen sometimes.

I think the whole yellow ribbon bit is yet another American import but i can never remember whether the tradition started the song or vice versa. They would tie it round oak trees until they came back. Its quite a nice idea behind it actually but still very sad when the some of the ribbons are left up.

Yes, the yellow ribbon idea does come from America. It was traditional for young young ladies who were courting, and for wives to wear yellow ribbons in their hair to show that they were awainting the home coming of their lovers or husbands and that they were not available! There was another some about it from the sixties (?) "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon".
