Im looking to buying some rhythm flash cards but not sure which one to get or whether I should make my own?

Has anyone use the rhythm flash cards from the British Kodaly Academy (Meredith Squires Publications) or Alfreds Essential of Music Theory Rhythm Flash cards? Can anyone recommend a good set to buy?

I'm not a proper teacher but I made my own -just drew out sets and it was quite fun!

I made my own and have quite a collection - problem is I use Flip-a-Rhythm and Harris Sight-reading books for rhythm aswell so mine rarely come out.........

I think the ones that Meredith makes are little cards which the children can use to create their own rhythms (absolutely brilliant for rhythm dictation too) although I think there may be some larger ones of hers wih 4/4 rhythms on too.

David Vinden makes brilliant ones in 4/4 and 3/4 that sell like hot cakes! Also available from the BKA I think (if you have any trouble getting hold of these please PM me and I'll put you in touch with David).

Of course you can make your own but it's VERY time-consuming if you write them out by hand because you have to measure everything so carefully!

Mind you, my Slave made me a brilliant set not so long ago - so if you too have a Slave then this is also an option...

Just been to have a look at Flip-a-Rhythm at an internet shop and it looks quite interesting. Can you tell me anymore about it - how does the "game" work that it mentions? Thanks!

Do you hire your slave out C or is he for your own personal use only?

Aw I will have to ask him! He is in Hungary at the moment so is a long-distance Slave right now . I am, of course, his Lord and Master so he will do whatever my bidding is!

Greetings! Cyrilla's slave here. I am able to take a quick break from my hectic schedule here in Hungary to talk about rhythm cards.

It is indeed true that I made a new set of rhythm cards for Cyrilla (sorry, I meant to say my Lord and Master) and also a set for myself. It does take a long time but there is actually something nice about using your very own set with the children. I also made a huge collection of smaller cards where I wrote out all the notes on the bass and treble staves, one to each card, and also with the the different note values as they were very handy for when I taught piano. You can play all kinds of games with them as well and the children enjoy them.

I just wonder if Cyrilla decides to offer my services to make some, if she'll decide the rate as well??!!

I've got the two flip-a-rhythm books (recommended on the CT course). They're very good. There are two sets of rhythm to read on each page, with the page cut horizontally so that any of the top rhythms can be used with the bottom rhythms. As there are 36 pages of rhythms, the book says there are over 5000 combinations.

If it's a individual pupil they'll do both rhythms at the same time generally - the top one on left leg, bottom one on right leg. If it's a group lesson in a school, I'll split the group up or do rounds etc. Sometimes I get people to play a scale to a given rhythm or to make a melody up to one. It's certainly a book you can be creative with.

They sound like a brilliant idea!

i always get my students to bring 5 small blank cards to their 2nd or 3rd lesson, we draw one note on each card as we learn it. When we move on to the left hand notes, 5 more cards are requested and the system is the same, new note per card.

i have also started to do this with rhythms, rests, dynamics. saves you buying the cards and it is educational for the student as they take cards home.

I encourage them to play simple recognition games with their parents, siblings etc thus their note recognition becomes exellent.

Well.....slave has been practising his sing and plays, canons, as well as playing Beethoven, Liszt and Rachmaninov on the piano tonight and he's rather tired. Hoping the Lord and Master will understand that even slaves make mistakes although they aren't meant to!

Thank goodness for that....for a minute there, I thought you might decide to get a new slave and then what would I do? It would be terrible!

I thought William Wilberforce abolished the slave trade - having a slave is illegal!!!!!

He is willingly my slave though - does that make a difference??? (ie it was actually his idea, not mine!)
