Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could advise us regarding the recommended instrument for a six year old boy who from the age of 4 has a dream of learning to play the French horn.

I know he will have to wait until his front teeth change.

Is there any other brass instrument he can learn in the meantime?

Any music school recommended in north London where he can play in ensembles?

Many thanks, Aya.

Hi,
I wouldn't recommend anything until his front teeth come in.

There are single (baby horns) that you will be able to get, but infairness, you will need to find a brass teacher, who will be able advise you in person.

Hope this helps

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE it is a complete myth that you can't play brass instruments untill 2nd teeth are in.

It may be a bit strange when they loose their front teeth but only for a couple of months.

I know plenty of brass players who started when they were four! there is no rule that sayd you cannot.

Would be best to start of with a student model first or a 2nd hand instrument.

Besson, Yamaha, Bach and Getzen are all reputable makes.

Speak to a brass reputable brass tutor and they will be able to point you in the right dorection.

Ok, you can play a brass instrument on your baby teeth, but I think it will be upto the brass teacher if they wish to take this on. I wouldn't!
However I would provide a baby horn to all small people, even than I think some pupils find them heavy. Full double horns are too heavy, I know people that has had to have them adapted to save their wrists.
