Picked some of my pieces for grade six the other day (though we shall most certinly go through many changes and options before we choose our favourites... I love having a big choice of songs and learning lots of different ones.)

Was just wondering what songs other people have done in the past.. for grade six and other grades too...

Also what was your favourite song which you performed in an exam, and which grade?

So far I have picked out:
Mister Snow from Carousel
Tu Lo Sai
and as a second choice for one of the lists (can't remember which)
Far From the Home I Love from Fiddler On the Roof.

Over the Mountains is wonderful and fun to sing.

For some reason although I like the music of John Ireland and Sea Fever is wonderful, I hate "I have twelve Oxen" The only way I'd be able to sing it would be to stick it in a programme with "I bought me a Cat" - Copland.

I did The Flowers. Really lovely - one of the ones I most enjoyed. smile.gif

That's a pity - I think it's rather a jolly song - complete nonsense of course, but then aren't most of them!

That's why it goes well with "I bought me a cat", two naiive children style songs composed by competent composers. The Piano part is great, I just couldn't see the point to it when I first tried to learn it. Good for lightening mood!

I heard someone sing this years and years ago in a festival, it was the first time i'd heard it and I had to stop myself laughing all the way through, i've always been haunted by my bad behaviour on that day, thanks for that, at least i'm not the only one biggrin.gif

I must be missing something as I rather like "I Have Twelve Oxen".

Oh dear, I feel very bad again now sad.gif I must admit the person singing it wasn't very good, I couldn't sing at all at the time either, maybe that clouded my judgement, i've got it in a soprano repertoire book, I think I should dig it out and learn it as penance blush.gif

I'm picking my grade 6 pieces as we speak!

So far I've chosen "Voi, Che Sapete" from List A and "The Man I love" from list D

Have no clue what to do from lists B and C. Don't really "love" any of the Lieder and don't know any of the songs on list C, although listened to Walton's "Under the Greenwood Tree" last night and quite liked it.

It was sung by a tenor though so not sure how it would sound being sung by a mezzo soprano.
