hey people,
im in lower six going into upper six, and was wondering where a musician who loves both playing AND theory would be happiest after A levels, music college or studying music at university?

some people think that music college has a really pressurised environment, because everyone wants to do music.

I agree, my teacher suggests uni as a more varied experiance, because you can meet people doing all kinds of subjects as opposed to just music, and it is handy in case you change your mind and want to try a different subject. But if you have you heart set on music college go for it, and best of luck to everyone

I'd really like to try out for music college, but I'm not sure if I will, because if I didn't get into college, what happens if the place I put down for second choice (e.g. a university) wouldn't take me because I put them down as second choice not first.
Does this happen?
I've got aaaages to think about this (another 2 years!) but I've always wondered. Sorry for being ignorant.

A rarity that I will post in the Students forum, but I thought I should mention that the Data Protection Act prevents any university from knowing what your other 5 choices are, and even if you've made all 5 of the other choices. Secondly, when applying to university you apply in alphabetical order, not preferential order.

hi!
yeah, i agree with hornplayer. It is a pressurised environment but if i had the choice to study music at uni or specialist music college, i'd choose college. One of my music teachers told me about when she went for an audition for the Royal Academy of Music. If i remember correctly there were many stages to the audition. There was playing which i think she was successful with and then she had to do an essay, then she had to do even more playing. She said it was a very hard audition and she did feel pressurised. One of my other music teachers told me they went to audition for one of the colleges 3 times! they ended up go to the Royal Academy of Music. Both are very good teachers

Hi everyone! (I haven't posted on the forum for suuuuuuuccch a long time!)
Like quite a few of you here, I'm going into Upper 6th at school, and confused about university v. music college. What nobody seems to know is that the Music College system is totally separate from the UCAS system. The data protection act has nothing to do with it- you make your 6 applications through UCAS and then you can also audition for as many music colleges as you like. Put another way, you cannot apply for music college through UCAS. So you don't have to make the decision now- apply for both university AND do your music college auditions, see where you get in and then make up your mind. That's the hard part though!
