Hi there,

Have been asked a question by a friend of mine in relation to one of their children. They think that the child may like to play piano but wanted some advice first. The child does not have any knuckles - as a result has quite short fingers and cannot make a fist. I really wasn't sure what to say and then I thought that I would ask you guys for your thoughts on the matter. Do you think it would be possible for this child to play piano?

Looking forward to hearing your replies and thoughts.

I don't see why not - although I guess the usual nice curved fingers might not be possible, flat fingers are manageable up to a certain level. If the child really wants to learn, they will.

I'm neither a teacher or a piano player...but I can't see there being much harm in letting this child have a try. If it's understood (at least by the parents) that there may be difficulties, there's nothing to lose.
Also, doing something as normal and/or wonderful as playing the piano could be fantastic if this child is conscious of their 'different hands'. As always, remember what is a modest achievement for some is an absolute joy and revelation to another smile.gif
